Re: 9x39 project
I've never heard of that. Thanks Yondering. I have used lithium grease before. I found it to be super smokey and that stuff probably isn't all that great to breathe in its' vaporized form either. Sil-Glide is smoky too, like vaseline, but not as bad as lithium and the smell is not objectionable (IM...

Re: 9x39 project
I've been thinking hard about ways to keep FRP down on the 9x39. Even with a super short expansion chamber in my 9mm can that I am using on it, there is a lot of noise with the first few shots. With not really wanting to use copper chore boy wrap, or fiberglass muffler packing which blows out in a ...

Re: 9x39 project
Because we can, and it works well when done correctly. The 35/9mm bore sizes are easy to make good hollow points expand, and the terminal effects can be excellent so it's not stunt shooting or inhumane. This is a lot different than guys trying to shoot deer with subsonic 240gr SMK bullets in a 300 B...

Re: 9x39 project
I'm going to get the velocity up a little more with the n310, but I think it's going to be my powder choice for plinking and playing around with. Titegroup has a clear advantage velocity wise where hunting and HD is concerned though. And is reasonably quiet and moreso than the factory ammo. Try Gre...

Re: Turning 17-4 (A)
The pic doesn't do it justice - it was a beautiful golden straw color with black streaks and bright magenta swarf! And the dang thing kept cutting just fine. Those inserts sure do put up with more abuse than my HSS tooling. https://i.imgur.com/PQifmTG.jpg That's not a good thing. If the part is hea...

Re: 9x39 project
I'll be doing some load testing using some fast burning powders so the pressure builds up quickly but should mostly burn out in the first 7 or 8 inches of barrel so it should be even more quiet by the time that I finish the project. Your 9x39 is different than the 358 Herrett of course, but I think...

Re: 9x39 project
I didn't cut the rib in my mag. I did use SS mags though. I think regardless of the follower work, you'll have to remove the ribs to get them to work right. If you don't have a mill, just cover shipping and I'll do it for you on a mag or two, it's pretty quick and easy and I don't mind contributing...

Re: 9x39 project
Sounds like one of my crazy projects lol. I however pan to do the vintorez'esq build on the AR platform with a ~9" barrel and an pinnned/welded faux suppressor tube with some nagant iron sights welded onto it that will be large enough ID for my 9mm form 1 to fit into. I made myself a "che...

Re: 9x39 project
Also, I could not get more than 5 rounds in a mag without having to beat the mag into the lower due to swelling out the mag body. I was using ASC brand 7.62x39 magazines. I'm going to try Cproducts next to see if they do any better since they use 400 grade stainless steel bodies on their mags. Thou...

Re: Please help settle a debate
Would the aluminum of a mag-lite be strong enough for a .308"? Not sure what it is made of, but the SOS is 7075. Yes, it is strong enough if you don't get it very hot. I've been using one for a number of years now. As to the argument on effectiveness - well that depends one the baffle design a...

Re: Recommend some carbide tools
threads were cut with a solid carbide tool. 8) The threads are my biggest worry. An ordinary lay-down style carbide insert threading tool works fine for Ti, nothing to be concerned about there. For the rest of the turning and boring, I really like the polished sharp carbide inserts intended for alu...

Re: will parkerizing effect threads on suppressor?
Your averages are meaningless when the numbers can be completely reversed depending on alloy. The intelligent conclusion is that the weights are so close as to be nearly the same, not that "stainless is heavier". That's where people like the OP end up with bad information, because people l...

Re: will parkerizing effect threads on suppressor?
Stainless is 4 pounds heavier per cubic foot; 490 vs. 494 That's the kind of generic statement that spreads false information. 4140 weighs .284 lb/in^3 304 is slightly heavier than 4140 at .289 lb/in^3 440C is slightly lighter than 4140 at .282 lb/in^3 17-4 is even lighter at .280 lb/in^3 All three...

Re: will parkerizing effect threads on suppressor?
? Stainless is not heavier than carbon steel (not to the degree that you'd notice without careful measurements anyway, depending on alloy). Who told you that? Or do you just mean that you'd need to make parts thicker if you used something like 304 stainless? Parkerizing won't have any effect on your...

Re: is there such as a thing as too big?
I could easily clip it with the mill. Im assuming by clip, you mean cut the hole slighly elongated to one side? That's not all of what a good baffle clip really is though; typically you want some material moved or removed on one side along the bullet path, not just off to the side. The point is to ...

Re: is there such as a thing as too big?
You're thinking of something basically the size of a Liberty Mystic X. I have one, and it's quieter on all my 22 LR guns than my Outback II, which is already way (WAY) quieter than the GM22. Go for it, but IMO you might as well make it a 9mm can while you're at it. With that much volume and length, ...

Re: action noise and suppressor hosts
https://www.materialsciencescorp.com/products/quiet-steel Interesting. Might be able to build stamped receivers like this. I don't how you would machine it and retain the properties. Some method of covering a receiver to create a similar effect could work too, similar to spray on sound deadening ma...

I don't know if it's commerically available in small quantities, but the concept could be applied with a bit of engineering.

Re: action noise and suppressor hosts
Along the lines of quieting action noise - there is an industrial product in the automotive industry called "quiet steel". It's a laminate sheet metal that's engineered to be acoustically dead; it doesn't ring or clank when struck or dropped, but instead has a very muted flat "thud&qu...

I'm happy to participate in a technical discussion about what can be done, and I think it's certainly worth of consideration. But that wasn't the question asked here. I thought it was obvious enough to be implied. I thought it was pretty obvious too, since that discussion was already happening. On ...

fishman and ECCO, if you're not interested in a discussion on reducing action noise, why are you participating in the thread? Don't assume your own preferences apply to everybody else, or even "most people". There's no value in bringing those comments into the discussion; pursuing mediocri...

Perhaps the question was a little obtuse and required too much reading. Has anybody measured changes in muzzle bore/rifling diameter after threading? These two articles are intimating it can happen under certain conditions due to changes in manufacturing induced barrel stresses brought about by rem...

I'm working on a titanium F1 can myself right now. It'll be bead blasted (not abrasive blasted); IMO Ti looks best either raw machined or bead blasted and aged, depending on the application. It does turn darker over a few weeks after blasting.

Re: increasing vs decreasing space between cones
Lots of people (me included) have used variable length spacers in their cone baffle form 1 cans. I can (and plan to...just finished it) reverse my stack from the traditional (and industrial standard) large to small and see what happens. It is on a 22lr bolt rifle, so it will be all muzzle noise, no...
