Re: Form 1 Baffle Criticism?
Wow. You should call it the CHAOS. Again, my comments are mainly aimed at the structural aspects. The slots machined into the horizontal stringers could be a problem. The slots that are nearly perpendicular to the bore axis remove quite a bit of material leaving only small tabs connecting the string...

Re: Form 1 Baffle Criticism?
I like it. I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you if it will be quiet or not. It is just a little too different to tell without testing. However, I can give you some structural advice. The unsupported wings of the baffles will not fair well when used on a supersonic rifle cartridge. Ev...

Re: Tips for cutting internal ACME threads?
Acme and stub Acme threads have substantial clearance built in to the thread form. On the order of .020". I believe YHM does use Acme threads. It is hard to measure with this much clearance. The best way to measure is the three wire method. If you don't know what I am talking about, watch a cou...

Re: Doc Dater says ti better than steel for heat, and more
I would also like to point out that strength alone is not a good way to pick an alloy for suppressor use. As the temps go up, you lose other material properties like hardness. Hardness of an alloy is important for peening and erosion resistance. Superalloys like Inconel are used because they maintai...

Re: Doc Dater says ti better than steel for heat, and more
It seems a bit extreme. I am trying to find a chart of tensile properties vs temperature. None of the common manufacturers have one online that I can find. OK found something. Here is a .pdf from Timet. It has a chart that shows yield and tensile vs temp. At approx. 1000 degrees, it has lost a littl...

Re: Doc Dater says ti better than steel for heat, and more
Titanium does not experience a huge drop in strength at high temps. It is used in the compressor stage of modern turbines and can see temps up to 1000 degrees in normal service. The combustion stage of a turbine might see 1800-2000 degrees and needs a nickel or cobalt alloy. The primary issue with h...

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt133/kyle03865/20140528_120310_zps93q4tcjk.jpg Don't judge. I broke two parting tools and trashed a saw blade, so I resorted to alternative means to get the baffle parted off. It's getting cleaned up now, and already looks better. Yeah, Inconel can be... fussy. I...

Re: Suppressor on a Glock 42
Did you make the barrel? It doesn't look factory.
I am a bit concerned about that gap between the barrel and the slide at the locking interface. A locked breach pistol shouldn't have relative movement between the barrel and slide until it unlocks.

Re: Alpha Dog Silencers
Since this is a boostered can, how is the (variable)additional mass going to affect the reliability of your booster? Adding a 5oz. laser/light combo is going to mess up timing and add stress to the entire system. I don't mean to speak for Alphas, but the booster "decouples" the inertial m...

I have looked at your intro site, and have a concern. I am assuming that you are advertising that people may add accessories to your can via the rail. You might check out Cubify Design. Cubify makes 3D printers and it's parent company bought out Alibre. Alibre was a lower cost alternative to Solidworks with about 90% of the functionality. Price is around $200. I have used an older copy of Alibre, and it was extremely similar to Solidworks. If you ...

Re: Lathe question for those knowledgable about such things?
Yeah, sounds like your spindle bearings are slightly worn or loose. As rockman pointed out, you should add pre-load to the spindle until you no longer see the jump. The pre-load should be high enough to prevent the spindle 'seeing' the loads of the motor and cutting tools. This will keep deflection ...

Re: Cutting Threads without CNC
I've never understood all the apparent fear of single point threading on the lathe. Based on the different forum questions and youtube videos you'd think it was some arcane skill taking a 4 year apprenticeship to master when the truth is I could have anyone threading on a manual lathe in 10 minutes...

Hey John, are you shy or something? You need to advertise this much more than you are.
Your Genesis .22 is outstanding. Doesn't get the respect it deserves IMO. You need to get out on the forums and show your wares.
If these are as good as your Genesis, they are going to be an outstanding bargain.

Re: A theoretical question about noise
I have fired many open bolt subguns in semi auto and have compared them to closed bolt guns in the same caliber. All of the open bolt guns were subjectively MUCH quieter to the ear than a closed bolt gun. A colt 9mm AR is almost painful at the right ear even with a very effective can. The quietest 9...

These are copies of the original Maxim baffle. In rifle calibers, they were supposed to be pretty good. Unlikely that any have ever been metered by modern equipment.

Re: Another K baffle suppressor
I won't rehash the other comments on your design. I just wanted to add that the vented area in your mount would make take down very difficult if not impossible after a normal range session. The carbon and lead would buildup in the tube threads behind the mount threads. You would have to unscrew the ...

Re: Peek as a baffle material
I have machined a stack of K's from PEEK. They were left quite thick for obvious reasons. Sound testing showed a great deal of promise, but durability was poor. After approx. 100 rounds, the baffles all had cracks radiating from the boreline on the rear face. The rear faces of these baffles were alm...

cyclone, I have been looking at various night devices for weeks now. I have given a lot of thought to the Spark. Re: Couple of questions about Ti-RANT 9
The Ti-Rant is assembled by using both hands on the tube while it is upside down on an assembly fixture. You can replicate this by putting some soft jaws or lead sheeting in the vise to protect the tool. Then put the silencer on the tool in the vise and you can get both hands on it and apply much mo...
