Re: Dehumidify the gunsafe

Well, then you know that will work. I've got mine set on 55%, maybe a little high for some. It cycles pretty much from May to Oct.

Re: Dehumidify the gunsafe

I really don't think you can beat a dehumidifier in the room the safe is in and a golden rod in the safe. Not the cheapest, but then again, how much do you have invested in your guns.

Thanks. I'll fill it with pb blaster tonight.

And yes the "all my mite" was intentional.

Stuck my YHM Mite closed. Looking for way to get it open

Hi all. I've always been good about unscrewing the core a couple of turns every 150 rounds or so on my Mite. Well, a few days ago, I forgot and stuck the damn thing. I had this happen once and I solved it by heating it up with a heat gun and then turning it with all my mite and getting it open. The ...

Re: Dehumidify the gunsafe

A light bulb and a golden rod work in exactly the same way. By keeping the temp of the inside of the safe always a few degrees above ambient, it lowers the relative humidity and prevents condensation. They don't actually remove humidity, but by raising the air temp, they lower the relative humidity....

Is the goal here to do full auto to failure, or just a reasonable test, like a 30 round mag dump?

Re: shootersdepot carbon fiber cans -- anyone tried these?

CF tubes are actually better equipped at dealing with pressure than steel, aluminum or titanium. The problem with most of them is that commercially available stuff can't deal well with heat because the resin softens. Like you stated, for a limited rate of fire scenario like a bolt action hunting rif...

Re: shootersdepot carbon fiber cans -- anyone tried these?

Nobody would make their own composites. You can buy high quality composite tubing to many different specs easily. Its also not really very expensive. 4 feet of 2" diameter tubing is less than $200. Expensive compared to comparable aluminum or steel tubing, but cheap when you consider the total ...

Re: SHTF Survival Gear List

DVD's are impractical. They max out at about 4 GB. Imagine organizing and saving everything in 4 GB chunks. My primary backup is a 1 TB hard drive. Its got all the good family stuff, including photos and digital movies of the kids. Its got the household docs also. Its stored in a poor man's Pelican ...

Re: SHTF Survival Gear List

Thats a great list of items, but again, you aren't prepared for the most likely reason to leave your home. A weather emergency or house fire. In a house fire or a Katrina situation you need 1) copies of photos, insurance, id, resume, photo inventory of everything in your home. 2) contact numbers for...

Re: SHTF Survival Gear List

****Edit - I think I just realized you were pretty tongue in cheek I think when you consider: 1) cost 2) weight 3) bulk 4) probability that it will actually be needed Body armor is pretty far down the list. Let me ask this. You're not one of those guys who has body armor but hasn't bothered with a c...

Re: shootersdepot carbon fiber cans -- anyone tried these?

Its ok if it is a bad conductor as long as it can take the heat. But most CF composites can't
The fiber itself can, but most resins can't

I don't know if I agree that what makes it a good conductor makes it a bad sound attenuator.

Re: shootersdepot carbon fiber cans -- anyone tried these?

Pretty much. But remember, a CF can is essentially a pipe with caps on each end. Its a pressure vessel. The stresses on it are entirely tensile stresses. (the pressure is trying to stretch the can) This plays into CF's strengths. A CF can COULD be made much lighter than an equivalent metal can. Ther...

Re: shootersdepot carbon fiber cans -- anyone tried these?

Because the term "carbon fiber" is not entirely correct. The correct term is carbon fiber composite. Carbon fiber is on its own, a limp black textile. It looks and feels like raw fiberglass. It is tremendously strong in tension, but has little to no strength any other way. The trick is to ...

I don't.

But I've seen the castle nut loosen up. It wouldn't have happened if it was staked.

but if you had to stake your life on an AR, would you stake it?

I don't bother to stake or loctite my "toy" ARs. But my dcm competition gun and my SHTF gun are both staked.

Twinsen, There is one other factor that hasn't been brought up yet. Thats that it is possible visually verify when something is secured when it is secured mechanically as opposed to chemically. I've roadraced motorcycles and flown and rebuilt aerobatic airplanes. In that world safetywire is king. Ev...

Yup endplates can be had for a couple bucks each.. Fancy ones can be a bit more.
And even if you bugger it up. You can smooth the face of the end plate and the nut with a file once apart.
Then you just ping it again when you reassemble.

Good point about frank acting as an escrow. I guess the only real difference is that he saw the gun and he shipped it.

Re: Most expensive MAC ever!

Thats a very good point. I hadn't thought about the fact that there may be a 4 month period between when you pay for the gun and when it is shipped to your Class 3 dealer. I can tell you there was a definite pucker factor when I bought my M11/9, and I only had $2700 into it. Now figure $15k for a pr...

There are a million fly by night escrow companies.

Oh. you just said. Escrow. not Escrow.com so I didn't know thats what you meant.
Even still, escrow's are a pain in the ass for the seller.

Gunpal is a better deal. You get credit card protection and the seller gets his $$ right away.

Re: Most expensive MAC ever!

For what its worth, I wouldn't do a deal with an escrow if I was the seller. I've gotten too many bogus offers with links to ripoff escrow accounts. Keep that in mind.

If you are concerned that much have the deal done FFL to FFL. That guarantees some level of security.

The super rare yellow tag is what makes his M16 worth so much. Am I missing something here? I don't know what his reserve is but a starting price for a Colt M16 (not sure if its A1 or A2) of $8900 is reasonable. Have prices of these things crashed in the last year? Don p.s. the mac is relisted or $...

How is the RRA as far as accuracy?

Is it a stainless bbled gun?
Supposedly their stainless bbled guns are super accurate on a budget.
