Re: Keyholing and what manufacturers are telling me
While the barrel is the most obvious culprit it's impossible to say for sure without examining both barrel and silencer. 30% keyholing without any visible marks in the can suggests a "glancing blow" inside the can, which means that the error is marginalt. Even minor and totally acceptable ...

Re: Budget 3D printed baffles?
I see your points, FFT does have some benefits. I hadn't considered soluble filaments, that could increase versatility quite a bit. And as you say, with the proper orientation you should be able to remove most overhang. Still, SLA-made for the amateur marked seems like a very nice development. A fri...

Re: Budget 3D printed baffles?
I also would not jump right to SLA Care to elaborate on this point? I've never had any interest in FFT, I don't have to try that to see that it requires a lot of trial&error. They also have serious limitations when it comes to "overhang" and such. Without any experience SLA seems like...

Re: What Makes A Suppressor "Rated" For A Caliber?
Calculating actual stresses in a silencer is exceedingly hard. Predicting muzzle pressures is simple with software like Quickload, but once gas enters the can it becomes very complicated. I would assume most mfgs use a combination of CFD, FEA, experience and testing to ensure integrity. For the end ...

Re: What Makes A Suppressor "Rated" For A Caliber?
my point is the exit pressure is not going to be more than the chamber pressure That is correct, but not very useful. Muzzle pressures for normal rifle rounds will generally be around 10-30% of chamber pressure, so the chamber pressure isn't very relevant when designing a silencer. Muzzle pressure ...

if you limit how much pressure you are going to have in the chamber (saami), the other is going to be affected proportionately Not really. Here's two loads from QL, 300BLK/16" barrel: 1. 125 Sierra/19grs H110: Chamber: 50.5ksi Muzzle: 4.8ksi 2. 240 Sierra/5.4grs HS6: Chamber: 55ksi Muzzle: 1.0...

Re: What Makes A Suppressor "Rated" For A Caliber?
Not sure I follow... SAAMI (or CIP for that matter) doesn't regulate muzzle pressure in any way. It will of course be lower than peak pressures, but they're not related in any way. A simple way to compare two rounds would be to divide the powder charge by total volume (a rough estimate valid for nor...

Re: What Makes A Suppressor "Rated" For A Caliber?
if chamber pressures and muzzle velocity are basically the same, and the projectile is smaller in diameter, then wouldn't one be able to safely extrapolate that both rounds are safe for a particular suppressor? Not really. A 300 delivers similar speeds & weights with less powder. The bore is al...

Re: What Makes A Suppressor "Rated" For A Caliber?
Muzzle pressure has little to do with maximum chamber pressure. It depends mainly on the amount of powder and the total volume of the chamber/barrel.

Re: See through silencer w/slow motion silencer testing
The particles are extremely small, far too small to be seen. The physics is basically the same as in a burning candle. The problem is that the flash pretty much obscures everything behind it, so you're only seeing the outside of this bubble. And the most interesting physics happens on the inside. I'...

Re: See through silencer w/slow motion silencer testing
Studying the blast bubble movement can very be very beneficial on how the pressure is moving and reacting to different baffle styles. The problem as I see it is that it's a high pressure front moving quickly through the can while the internal pressure is low. What's important is how the gases flow ...

Re: See through silencer w/slow motion silencer testing
The flash is due to the temperature of the gas exiting the barrel. Or to be more precise, it's glowing particles of soot within that gas. Want proof?garredondojr wrote: the reason their is a flash is the presence of O2 in the can

Re: See through silencer w/slow motion silencer testing
I think that will open a whole new can o' worms as far as R&D is concerned Nah, I doubt it. You can't really see the flow, all you see is the flash filling the can. Secondly it doesn't matter how it looks, only how it meters. It would probably be useful for "calibrating" CFD simulatio...

Re: HAPPENING NOW.... Tune in
But to be fair, and honest, aren't silencers mostly about fun? They're right about hearing protection tech being fairly advanced these days. I mean for about 1/3 the cost of a decent commercial silencer one can have custom moulded in-ear electronic active protection, noise cancelling sort of thing....

Re: Over the barrel suppressors
It's not that complicated.
For any given total length (or weight) they will be (slightly) less effective than a straight front-mounted can. For any given added length (in front of the muzzle) they will be more effective.

Re: Drilling Misshap
Its 17-4PH. Carbide Depot is recommending that I have a SFM of 30-60 while the Morse cutting tools website is recommending 20. I found a 220 RPM drill press I'll pick it up and use it to get a SFM of 19.7. He/you were pushing 60sfm which is quite high for hard steels. 30 would probably be safe (ass...

Re: Tube erosion?
I agree, aluminum cans can corrode quite fast if not properly cared for. But without having seen it it's just speculation on my side.
That being said, aluminum centerfire cans are more common than roadkill around here, have yet to see a can with erosion at the outer walls.

Re: Tube erosion?
Short answer: I doubt it. The velocity will be greatest at the bore, at the periphery the gas will flow slower and any erosion will be distributed over a much larger area. So except for the blast chamber (especially with an internal brake) I wouldn't worry too much about it. I put a grade 2 Ti space...

You're not even in the right ballpark for a pistol can. Start by checking the weight of commercial cans, this will tell you how heavy you can go without getting into trouble.

I consider religious nutjobs right-wing.
I'm not saying left wingnuts can't turn to terror, we've seen a lot of this in past times. But when it comes to lone shooters in later years I have the distinct impression most are right wing fanatics.
