Re: 16 inch barrels

I just got my AR upper together. With a 10" barrel, pistol length gas system, a .095" gas port, and proper loading, it is working well with subsonic 220gr and near max loaded supersonic 125gr. By playing with the powder burn rates, I can make the gas system cycle pretty much the same with ...

Have a sako type extractor in my Rem 700 chambered for the whisper, and it works great.

This is he absolute smallest I would consider, and even with it you will find it difficult to do many things. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200399672_200399672 Look for a used machine in good shape. Do your homework on what to look for when buying a used machine. Learn how to proper...

Re: What primers for the 300 fireball?

Haha, I also had forgotten of supersonic use of this caliber. Silly me. 240-260 grain subsonic loads get up there in pressure too, and with non-ideal powder selection, you could be getting full 55,000 PSI loads that are subsonic. Just because its subsonic doesnt mean its low chamber pressure :) +1 ...

Re: What twist for 300 Whisper, 8.5" barrel, 220 grain?

At 1020 fps, a 220 MK will have 18.7 inches drop at 100 yards. At 1010 fps, it would be 19.0 inches. So in order to have 0.3 inch groups you would need to have velocity controlled to +- 5 fps out to three standard deviations. This would be about a 3 fps for one standard deviation in velocity. This ...

Re: What twist for 300 Whisper, 8.5" barrel, 220 grain?

Currently it's being used in a bolt gun, loaded to mag length for it. They will fit in an AR mag, but can't say if they feed there. I will be building a couple AR uppers before long, and then I will know. I know my loads are longer then the Corbon, and my first loads were loaded to that short length...

Re: 300 whisper barrel work

I haven't tried a 1:7 twist, but can tell you a milk jug full of water will show that a 220SMK tumbles out of a 1:8 after impact. I shot jugs from 100, 140, 170, and 200 while trying out my ballistics program and pda ballistics software. Bullets made clean entry holes, but exit holes showed the bull...

Re: What twist for 300 Whisper, 8.5" barrel, 220 grain?

I recently put together my first 300-221. With a Shilen 1-8 16" barrel it shoots fantastic with 220gr handloads. I have run about 400 rounds of handloads through it as well as one box of Corbon. I haven't shot many of my 240gr loads yet, but what I have shot did very well. I will caution that t...

I wouldn't let it lay around with out being engraved, but if you finish everything else and then engrave it there is no problem. Every step is a manufacturing process, and it's not complete until all steps, including the engraving, are finished. I do mine diferently, but for different reasons. I use...

As stated already, before or after is fine. The engraving is part of the manufacturing process, and can be done any time during building the can.

Input on my first 45 can?

I just received my first FNP45 Tactical in the other day, and I couldn't bring myself to put it in the showcase for sale. This pistol just screams for a can. I ordered a commercial can, but the idea of waiting on the ATF to approve the form 3 before shooting the pistol suppressed just wasn't an opti...

Just like above, once you have the form back you are good to go with either of the two routes above. You are the legal builder, but you can farm the baffles out to a class 2 manufacturer by sending them the tube. Or you can have anyone else 'help you' build it, as long as the materials are ALWAYS in...

I started with a 9x20, and quickly learned I should have saved for a larger machine. I did make some suppressors on the 9x20, and even threaded a few 16" barrels. It can be done on the small machines like my first one, and if you are totally new to it that can be a safer route to go. The little...

Also check out Shars online for low cost tooling. Start out with cheap mills and lathe bits. Until you understand how they work and what feed rates and coolants to use, you will ruin a number of cutting tools. Might as well be cheap ones that you bugger up.

Save yourself some real future headaches and avoid the combo machines. They are really only good for model builders. You won't be able to thread barrels on it, and you will be very limited on what you can do with building supressors. I started with a 9x20 jet lathe and a harbor freight benchtop mill...
