Re: Letter from Ukraine army about my silencers to help defeat Russia
Pretty sure there are machine shops, pipe, and washers in Ukraine. That's what most Russian suppressors are built with. The Russians do have some better designs but why double the cost of the Ak

Re: muzzle pressure /hoop strength worksheet ?
The muzzle pressure should be slightly different between the two operating systems, but I don't believe it is significant enough to worry about. If you assume a bolt action type setup it will give you the higher pressure of the two systems and thus result in a bit of a conservative build on a gas dr...

Re: muzzle pressure /hoop strength worksheet ?
M855 is a 5.56 spec not .223 and M855 is pushing beyond 5.56 spec to proofing load pressure. Its the main reason why one should not fire 5.56 in 223. Higher pressure and slight case difference can cause huge pressure spike. That's incorrect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.56%C3%9745mm_NATO#5.56_mm_...

Re: muzzle pressure /hoop strength worksheet ?
OK that makes sense, the way I read it was 55kpsi was at 3" not chamber pressure . I thought M855 was 62kpsi and sammi spec. .223 was 55kpsi ,but it seems that mixup is from different test methods (c.i.p. vs sammi) M855 is a 5.56 spec not .223 and M855 is pushing beyond 5.56 spec to proofing l...

Re: Would someone please check my math
I'm a bit fuzzy headed right now. You don't want the can to burst but more importantly you don't want it to swell or deform so I think you need to base calculations on yeild strength. Deformation can lead to baffle strikes and huge Poi shift. It will create thinning of the walls which leads to burst...

Re: Would someone please check my math
Thanks,
I forgot that report had the averaged test data table in it along with the graph. We could run the numbers again but the theory will still stand. We can assume that P1*V1=P2*V2.
I'll chart the whole curve later when I have a PC and not a mobile device to work on.

Re: What causes a deeper tone in a F1 can?
Most of the he methods mentioned are dampining the natural harmonic frequency of the can. Without testing I would assume a suppressor can will react and ring like a orchestra bell which is a tube suspended from one end. Longer tubes and larger diameter tubes have a deeper tone. There are nodes withi...

Re: Would someone please check my math
Math is a bit off but you are in the correct ballpark. First is to check and see if your assumption of using Boyle's Law is applicable. To check run chart numbers on both sides of the value you are interested in. The resolution of the chart is lacking so there will be some error. Assume diameter of ...

Re: free volume question
I don't believe it will get you a final design. I don't believe it will calculate dB ratings. The rules of thumb are just a guideline for quick estimates for a design. Mainly for home builds but I'm wanting to be emulate commercial cans. If you look at most suppressors they are fundamentally similar...

free volume question
Does anyone have the free volume of any commercial suppressors? I'd like to compare the outer cylindrical solids volume vs the actual free volume inside the can. I'd like to get a rough ratio for free volume vs outer physical volume. I'm working on a set of "Rules of Thumb” for suppressor desig...

Re: Anodizing
Mechanical cleaning like sand blasting is the best way to guarantee clean metal. You can etch and de-smut the AL with caustic soda solution, rinse, nitric acid solution rinse, then anodize.
Caustic soda solution is lye dissolved in water at about 80g/l
Hope this helps.

Seems like we are getting our chemistry crossed.... Propylene glycol is very safe and is used in skin care products, drugs, e cigarettes, and food additives. The chemical is metabolized rapidly and through normal body functions. Toxicity is practically impossible 5 rough inhalation or consumption. E...

Re: Check out the various documents that Sig & BATFE have filed in their litigation over the MPX brake.
Here's a funny little gem buried in Sig's latest motion for summary judgement (emphasis added by me). Testing conducted by Sig Sauer on the muzzle brakes shown in the ATF Letter (AR 821) demonstrates that assembly of an outer tube on virtually any muzzle brake creates a silencer. EL Dec. ¶ 34. ATF ...

Yes the ATF reply was related to the four chamber brake. Will machine a few and ship them I guess.

I got a reply from the ATF technology branch related to the brake design. I submitted cad drawings with dimensions and verbal description. The reply stated that they could not make a determination without a physical prototype for testing and review. They warned that it has similar characteristics as...

Correlation does not imply causation. The same curve has been fit with a high correlation to vacinnes, organic food sales, epadurals during birth, proximity to freeways, cell phone usage, internet usage, income, lack of parasites, use of acetaminophen...... The increase in diagnosed autism cases is ...

practical question for state university
I'm going to school full time to finish a PhD in Explosives Engineering. At this time there are no courses taught related to firearms, gunpowder, reloading, or suppressors. Several of us graduate students are very interested in suppressors and reloading. As gunpowder and firearm use is the most comm...

Most excellent, if only was allowed to attempt such work in the USA. Have you had any problems with the typical 60degree threads? We have had some problems at work with some threads failing due to delamination at the roots. I'd like to try rounded, "knuckle" threads that are a DIN standard...

Re: 3D Printed MonoCore - I (Pics heavy !)
The core could be printed with thin walls and low density fill. Then either dipped in ceramic slurry or Rtv to create a "lost wax" mold. Then when suffecently thick the ABS could be desolved out with acetone. The void could be filled with molten metal.....the only reason to dissolve the ab...

Ares states that they have asked for the ATFs opinion but they have not received a response.....and if the response is negative they will sue the ATF. To modify the brake is easyer than stated....it just needs a tube to slide over the OD. Notch the tube so nubs slide into slots. To make permanent ju...

Re: 3D Printed MonoCore - I (Pics heavy !)
The plastic will not last long but will function fine for a 22lr design as long as there is no string firing done. I do not know the OPs location or creditials......in the US that print is a silencer and requires the correct paper work done prior to hitting the "print" button. I'm sure the...

Re: Sectioned S&W MPX 2 K can
I totally agree, there is a high up front cost to die casting. I would think the break even cost point vs machining would be rather low due to this design. I'm not sold on the nickel as a base metal. There are a few nickels that can be diecast or vacuum cast but they are typically very expensive. Th...
