Re: Form 1 can compatibility with my TiRant 45

How can using a removable part from a registered suppressor on another registered suppressor be illegal? I don't buy it. -Jim Its all about the design. If not designed properly then it can have legal issues with a Form1 build. The patents would be more of a concern for me. Give me an example of how...

Re: Tips for cutting internal ACME threads?

Thanks for the tips all! I've been doing a lot of research on ACME threads lately. The wide tolerances does make it difficult to measure accurately. So far, I believe that it's 1.030 major diameter, 8 TPI, Stub ACME. At least, that's what I'm going to cut on my first try. I've decided to try and thr...

Is that a '17 or '8 in your photo? Is that what your working on out there?

Re: Tips for cutting internal ACME threads?

I just bought a left hand threading bar that accepts inserts and got stub acme inserts for it. Just cut a relief and use it as start point put lathe in reverse and use thread chart for depths of each pass. It should be double start if I'm not mistaken. You'll need to figure out what numbers on your...

Tips for cutting internal ACME threads?

All of the tutorials I can find for ACME threads are for external threads. I want to make an adapter that fits onto my many YHM QD mounts. I found here, and measured my own mounts that the thread pattern is 8TPI with a major diameter of 1.030 inches and a thread depth of 0.045". Any tips for th...

Re: drawing help

Autodesk Fusion 360 was free for hobbyists last I checked, I haven't used it in a while. I'm too set in my CAD ways to learn how Autodesk does things. There is always sketchup as well. I'm partial to Alibre Design which is now called Cubify Design. It's $200.00, but I don't feel like I'm missing any...

Great work! A 308 can is an ambitious project for a first try. Sounds like you are happy with it, if I were you I'd just keep shooting it and not worry about what you can do to make it lighter.

Re: Questions with 22LR and .223/5.56 titanium suppressors

About the tooling necessary....would standard HSS/Cobalt be ok for drilling grade 5? Or, should I consider getting a solid carbide drill bit? I wouldn't even bother with HSS in titanium . . . I would go straight to carbide with some fancy TiALN or whatever coating. I have had issues with using Ti t...

Re: titanium anodizing

That is "flame anodizing". Not recommended for anything requiring any strength as it damages the structure of the titanium. Looks pretty on knives and pens and the sort but that should ever be done to a silencer tube! I would use extreme caution when shooting that thing, BAD things can ha...

Re: All Titanium can for .223

Thanks Jim. Inconel 718 is the toughest stuff I've ever carved! Turning it wasn't so terribly bad, slow speeds, flood coolant, and deepish cuts, were the winning combination. But parting it off became an exercise in patience! By comparison the 6al4v is a cakewalk. I didn't weigh the baffles individ...

Re: threading titanium tube for endcaps

I know I'm late to the thread. I made a youtube video on single point threadmilling. I'm a huge Bobcad user and fan, but Advent 2008 is free and does a very good job. I did an AR-15 lower in Titanium and thread milled the buffer tube exactly the same way I did it in aluminum in the video below. I ju...

Re: All Titanium can for .223

Jim from your YouTube comments here, thanks for reminding me to come over here. Great build! Any lessons learned from turning Inconel? How was it compared to the 6al-4v? I'm pretty comfortable with 6al-4v now it seems that as long as you take your time I find that it works pretty easily. What is you...

Re: Titanium cutting confusion

I don't know how well mist coolant will work out for you. Never tried it, but your tool will get white hot almost instantly. It generates a crazy amount of heat. I did quite a bit of cutting in 6AL-4V with no coolant at all and got what I thought was decent tool life. I used a slow surface speed, t...

Re: Titanium cutting confusion

It's springy (low youngs modulus), a very poor conductor of heat and work hardens badly. And do be prepared for looooong stringy turnings, sharp as h*ll. I've heard that, but the only time I worked hardened Ti was when I had a programming error and the tool plunged straight into the workpiece. It b...

Re: Titanium cutting confusion

I think you are over thinking this. Go put some Ti in your lathe and try things until you find what works best on your machine. You are right, keep the surface speed slow and the feed rate not slow (I would't say fast). Sharpen your bits like you always do and see if they work.

Re: Modern Sionic Clone?

Something that huge, I'd HAVE to try my can-in-a-can idea. Think of a 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" tube suppressor (cones, k's, whatever you choose) with 'rings' (some vented, some not, to make chambers fore and aft) to center it in the outer can. Getting into the 2+" diameter that you're looking at f...

Re: All titanium can for .22

Beware!!!! The dip damages titanium! You may be right, but I'd like to see evidence. It's damned inert. Did a test today. Here are the results: I used 50/50 White Vinegar / 3% Hyrdogen Peroxide on a bar of 6AL-4V (Grade 5) Titanium with a "from the mill" smooth finish. Also as a "con...
