Re: My TI .308 build

I met up with some friends today and did a side by side comparison. The thunderbeast kicked my butt. Lol I was shooting a .260 and he had a 6mm creedmore. Not an exact Apple to Apple comparison but close enough. From behind my gun they sounded the same but when I stood between both rifles and had a ...

Re: My TI .308 build

machines fine but I had a hell of a time drilling it for some reason. I used indexable carbide tooling and it turns great. I would strongly recomend a flood coolant system. I made a test cut dry when I first got the Ti. it made a short ribbon about 3inches long and then caught on fire. That was a fi...

Re: My TI .308 build

Thanks guys. I got out this weekend to shoot it at the outdoor range. I am quite pleased with the results. I popped out my earplugs for a few rounds and it was quiet enough I would feel comfortable shooting it without them however I will still use them just to be safe. My zero was .2 mil lower than ...

Re: My TI .308 build

Thanks. I was concerned about welding but found it to be easier than aluminum. You can see how much heat you are putting into the metal. The setup helps a lot. It made it easy to get good gas coverage. However if I do full 360 welds in one shot it will still need a trailing cup to keep the weld shie...

My TI .308 build

I have been reading alot on here and doing research and finally came up with a simple design I wanted to build. I have stamps for 3 cans so after some comparison testing I may change the design a little for the next 2. I ended up building this one out of titanium to try to trim a little weight over ...

Re: grade 5 drilling question

My lathe goes from 90rpm to 240 so I between is not an option untill I upgrade to a vfd. Thanks for all the info posted. I was trying to get this done with existing tooling since it is not going to be a regular material for me to work with. I did see a video of an indexable cutter gun drill that pun...

Re: grade 5 drilling question

Well I decided to give it another go as I needed a deep hole in my end cap. I was successful in punching thru it using a new guherring parabolic 5/16 drill. Lathe at 240rpm. I hit it with a center drill and then eased the drill bit just until it made contact and layed on the tailstock handle hard. I...

I have a bowers cac9 can on my Mac. Next time I have it out I will measure it cold and hot after a mag dump. I am curious to see if it grows much.

when do you prefer to thread and face the mount

When do you thread and face the mount? So I am making progress on my first titanuim can for a .308 It will be 1.5od by 10.5 long. My plan is integeral spacer/baffles and likely a mount that is a reflex design with about 2 inches over the barrel. I am planning on tig welding the core together and the...

Re: grade 9 drilling question

It is odd, I can use plain old HSS centerdrills and they cut just fine. I use short jobber drills, standard drills, of several brands and types and just have not been able to get a good cut. I had the best luck with guhhering parabolic drills but I chip the corners on the first hole, even with the c...

Re: were you afraid to shoot your first form1 can ?

I started building guns first before suppressors. My first one was a 50bmg rifle. Everyone chickened out on shooting the first shot. I planned to use string from behind a tree to fire several rounds and then magnaflux it to inspect for cracks. A few friends were arguing on who was going to be the fi...

Re: grade 9 drilling question

Thanks guys. I will try to set the lathe on it's slowest speed and see what happens. I just ordered some extra rod last night so I have a few more try's to get my technique down before I get going on the baffles. I also ordered a small diameter boring bar to hopefully be able to cut an internal tape...

Re: How to initiate contact with sherif/commissioner

I set an appointment and had all my paperwork lined up. I had to sit down with the chief, commander and city attorney and explain why I wanted to buy a machinegun. I also brought pictures of my safe and a photo of me shooting a MG in a competition. They reviewed the paperwork and made sure it did no...

Re: grade 9 drilling question

Not easier, but I'd only use grade 9 for the tube, and not for internals or endcaps. Grade 5 is stronger. Dr. K - Willing to bet that it is Grade5 bar stock, never seen Grade9 barstock in the US....they have some I can import from China but in the US it is pretty darn rare. If you really did get Gr...

Re: grade 9 drilling question

I will go back and try to find the invoice. I had 9 written on the bar stock but I may have been mistaken. I have tried from 240 rpm up to 700. Mostly on the 240-400 range. So far I can turn it with std carbide or indexable carbide tools just fine. The ball endmill works great. I also have an indexa...

Re: grade 9 drilling question

It acts like it is hardening but even with a new clean surface and being very aggressive it just won't drill well at all. Ultimately I can get it done with the endmills. I just fine it odd I can't drill it. I don't plan on wasting any more drill bits at this point. As for grade of the TI. I found th...

grade 5 drilling question

Hello all. I finally got around to working on another can. this one is being made from grade 9 TI. I am working on machining a test piece from round stock and had a heck of a time drilling a hole in it. I am working on a 12/36 lathe with flood coolant. Turning is no problem at all. I am cutting it f...

Re: Threading 316 Stainless

Are you setting the cross slide to 29deg. If you are cutting with the cutter feed approaching the work straight on so the cutter is trying to cut on both sides of the thread it will not cut as clean.

I would suggest a gun drill before machining the baffles or maybe a wire edm machine. I have not made a mono so these are just suggestions.

Re: Backpurging stainless when using tig.

Ideally, I would weld a thin walled stainless or Ti suppressor core in our atmospheric chamber. Not likely to find one outside a welding shop. It can be easily done with a pretty simple back gas set-up though. Run back-gas around 4-5 CFM. This is one of the set-ups we use: I have seen guys use bead...
