Re: Lathe question: face grooving toolbit?

Nope, this time I just used a Shars end mill with ti coating, I don't think they have any cobalt at that price point. I wasn't ready to sacrifice a carbide end mill yet. For now I've decided to just leave the end cap without a groove and concentrate on the cones in order to finish the can.

Re: Lathe question: face grooving toolbit?

I tried it today but with limited success. It can be done but you have to mount it just right and modify the end mill so you can really clamp down on it in the toolholder. It vibrated like crazy and I decided it was a bit too messy so I left it alone, there's not a huge weight difference anyway. Mig...

Re: Lathe question: face grooving toolbit?

L1A1Rocker: Thank you! I actually saw that post awhile ago while reading up on titanium but promptly forgot about it. I'm trying the two flute endmill trick tomorrow! I've been binge reading the silencersmithing forum, about 100 pages back. It's been very helpful for the can I'm making. I actually s...

Re: Lathe question: face grooving toolbit?

I'll definitely try that, I'm ordering a carbide ball end mill or two right now, thanks for the tip. Also, I usually flood cool but the pump died last week, I'll rig something up while waiting for the end mill. If I can get a nice finish that would save me a lot of money and if it doesn't work it's ...

Re: Lathe question: face grooving toolbit?

Thank you Bendersquint and Enfield577. I have huge respect for both of you guys and all your points are valid. I did try to mill it out using a rotary index table but even with lowly 304SS it flexes too much so I gave up after 3 passes doing 0.050" each pass. It looks like I will have to drill holes...

Lathe question: face grooving toolbit?

Hi, I'm building my first titanium silencer and in the quest for low weight I've run into a wall getting the rear end cap as light as possible. As it has the threads for the tube and the threads for the barrel there's a lot of metal between the two threads, I'd like to carve out a groove there in or...

Re: Subsonic 300 AAC Blackout Round?

The ballistics are just not on your side. No matter how heavy the bullet, when it's launched at less than 1.100 fps it will have lost most of its energy when it reaches 200 yards. I suspect it wont even penetrate the animal at 300 yards but that's just a guess. The bullet probably wont expand at all...

I usually don't frequent ar15.com but their "official reloading bench picture thread" is pretty awesome. It's fifty pages long and I found a lot of good ideas there. Good luck.

To paraphrase Arrested Development: I've made a huge mistake.

I wrongly assumed that the "Coffee Problem" LavaRed referred to was health related, not of an agricultural nature. Sorry. I'll read up on the subject before sprouting an opinion the next time

Re: Sorry that I haven't been in the spotlight much lately..

Hey, I've got you covered on the coffee situation. Ask any argentinian worth his salt what he's drinking. He will answer mate (Mah-teh), it's kind of like a herbal tea but you drink the infusion through a metal straw, it looks totally like drug paraphernalia (sp?). It's main ingredient is roasted le...

Make the small end fitting out of brass, Delrin will melt if the barrel gets hot.

Re: Aluminum .223 silencer question

I agree, it just doesn't seem to be strong enough in my eyes. However I found it remarkable how many nordic can makers choose to go with Al and people seem to be happy with the weight savings. Cost is about the same for stainless and aluminum cans. What I can't figure out is why aluminum is so popul...

Enfield577: I laughed when I read that you only need your wife's permission to make a silencer, maybe because that's exactly my situation. I'm sorry to read that she's ill, my prayers go out to both of you, I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing she gets better soon.

Re: How hot does a barrel get?

There is a reason why the bushing is in brass. Why does everyone always want to reinvent the wheel when it works great as it is? Can you please expand on your statement? I too suspect there is a reason for making it out of brass, however that reason eludes me. Man, you sure come acoss as grumpy som...

How hot does a barrel get?

I want to use a Teflon (PTFE) bushing to center a reflex can on a semiauto .308, I'm wondering how hot the barrel gets, Teflon starts to melt at 620 degrees Fahrenheit (327 Celsius). I'd like to do some rapid semi auto fire, drills with 5-10 shots at a time. Does anyone know if Teflon bushings might...
