Boattail backwards?

I've read elsewhere about loading boattail bullets backwards for subsonic use. While that does some good things for theoretical balance of the bullet, does it serve well for velocity retention and accuracy? I don't see any commercial subsonics doing this.

Thanks!

Re: Dimension suggestions for .308 supersonic, .338 subsonic?

I don't know. Maybe I should (once my Form 1 comes back) buy "solvent trap" parts, drill them where they're punched, and call it good. I just figure I have the opportunity to work what metalcrafting skills I have a little harder than that.

Re: Dimension suggestions for .308 supersonic, .338 subsonic?

Yes, I intend to buy a tube and do a stepped baffle involving some fender washers and some drilled round bar stock. I have a drill press and a welder, but not a lathe. I was thinking of a monocore design earlier, but I think I can do something lighter with the tools I have. Perhaps I need to allow h...

I'm not much of a machinist. I don't follow the drilling vs boring distinction.

Is this what you mean? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boring_(manufacturing)

So are you saying to put in a basically different bit for the final pass?

Re: Dimension suggestions for .308 supersonic, .338 subsonic?

OK, thank you all. In your experience then, larger can diameter does little for suppression? Obviously it adds weight. .338 + .060 = .398, so larger than the .375 I'd initially guessed. 13/32 = .40625, so about as close to the above recommendation as a standard size drill will get. It's good to see ...

Dimension suggestions for .308 supersonic, .338 subsonic?

I'm working on my paperwork for my first suppressor and working on the design ... to fill up my time between now and getting the paperwork back. I want to build a can suitable for use on my LR-308 to use with supersonic ammo. That's the highest pressure for which I intend to build. I want the bore b...

Aha, I wasn't sure printing in metal would be an option. Strong enough for the pressure ... since we're talking rimfire?

What material will your final product be made of? My very limited machining knowledge does not show me a way to build that design on a lathe, milling machine, etc.

Odd quirks, indeed. We have far more liberty than you on the firearm and far less on the suppressor.

Thanks. Do you suggest downloading the card and printing on card stock? Or something else? I can buy 50-packs from Amazon. I wonder what I'd do with the other 49 cards ... :)

Taking Form 1 to my Sheriff -- what do I need to take with me?

I'm getting an appointment with my sheriff to review my first Form 1. I expect to take my drivers' license and carry permit as ID. Besides the Form 1 itself, what else should I take? I'm in Indiana, though I don't know how much difference that makes.

Thanks!

Awesome!

Indiana got legal hunting with suppressors last year and deer hunting on private land with 30-caliber rifles this year. If I were building 300 Blackout parts ... I'd be cheering extra loudly!

Thanks for the specific recommendation and account of your experience.

I'm afraid that's beyond my very rudimentary fabrication and machining skills ... but ... perhaps in a few more years I can build one to those specs. It sounds like you've worked out a very nice design.

Thank you both.

Now, that Huntertown T22 looks intriguing. They say if you need to replace the barrel to change twist rate, that can be done. Their shop is in Fort Wayne ... I think I'll visit them soon!

Re: 10/22 integrally suppressed barrel suitable for 60gr SSS?

Thanks, that Volquartsen looks nice. There are also some lower-priced 1:9 barrels available. If one does not want to lose performance from the .22, would you recommend a screw-on suppressor instead of an integral? The more I read about integral suppressors, the more it appears they cut performance b...

10/22 integrally suppressed barrel suitable for 60gr SSS?

I'm considering an integrally suppressed 10/22 as my first step into the quiet world. I see several brands of barrels integrally suppressed. But I want to be able to shoot the Aguila 60 grain SSS rounds successfully. For that, Internet wisdom recommends a 1:9 twist instead of the Ruger-standard 1:16...

Don't give up on your Doctorate yet. Working as a gunsmith and building testing and repairing suppressors over the years has lead me to a theory I call BOUNCE. The signs are a repeatable POI shift that tracks with the rotational position of the suppressor but no indication of a strike is present. A...

Neat! I'd been wanting something inconspicuous in which I could put a disassembled LR-308 or a 10/22 w/ a folded stock. Some of those Eberlestock options look nice.
