Re: Suppressing 7" 5.56mm ?

Excellent. I will look at his blast chamber length, as I recall it wasn't that long. It's just baffles and spacers, so easy enough to change for him. I ought to re-baffle it entirely. The baffles are flat. In fact, the first three are flat, with a bevel at the bore, going toward the bore, basically ...

Re: Planning 2 more F1s

Looking around at materials, 316 SS is available in 1.75" OD with a .065" wall, seamless tube. Of course, 316 SS is also available as solid bar. I can then simply plug weld the baffles in place through the tube, and weld both end caps on, to save some weight. The rear cap will be threaded ...

Suppressing 7" 5.56mm ?

Anybody suppress a 7" barrel AR in 5.56mm? Somebody posed this question to me not long ago. They have an AR SBR at 7", and wanted to know if the suppressor they had could be put on it. They contacted the manufacturer, and were told it would not be warranted for barrels under 12", but ...

That suppressor looks familiar.
Did I see a thread on it here?

Re: Planning 2 more F1s

Well, I got the F1 efiled for the 5.56 can. There are going to be some changes, though. I acquired an AR lower in a trade deal, so I'm going to do a custom, sort of integral build. The rifle will have a 12" barrel, with the can permanently affixed to end at about 17". Therefore, only one s...

Re: Trying to visualize the machining of the Ks

I didn't go look at any of the tutorial links, but it sounds like it's pretty well covered. But, when working down the length of a bar, you don't want to go too far at a time. When drilling holes, especially these smaller ones, they will always wander off center. So, you want to drill only enough fo...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

I did not know what convention on holes was, or even if it was used. I did notice that on the comparison suppressor, that didn't have the problem, the blast chamber area was larger. I hoped that the hole would increase the blast chamber some, by allowing the area outside the cone to become part of i...

If you look at the above pic, and add two holes, one on either side of the center, pretty much centered in the face groove, right a...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Ok, so I did two things. One, I turned down the OD of the suppressor to get rid of some unnecessary weight. I turned the tube from .070" wall down to about .040" wall. This took the OD from 1" to about .940", and gave almost a full sight picture on the pistol. It also took the we...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Ok, so I got to try it on the 10/22, and a bolt action .22 rifle, and I got to compare it to a Tactical Innovations Stratus. I had earlier stated that on the Bersa pistol, there is no discernible first round pop, and that all fired rounds sound the same, which it does. Firing a lot of cheap bulk amm...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Now for the weights. It is clearly seen that all the weight is in the tube. The baffles are at about 1/4 oz, the front cap is under 1/4 oz, the rear cap is 1/2 oz, but the tube is right at 3 oz. The tube is .070" wall. Compared to factory aluminum units, they have aluminum tubes of .049" w...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

First, another of the rear cap, with the o-ring. The bore of the o-ring is fairly tight, just over 7/16". But, because of the radiused nature of the o-ring, if it were close to half inch, it would not have much bearing, and therefore not much grip to hold. This way, even though part of it wears...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Yes, they are. Got it to the shop yesterday, got my bolt rifle barrel threaded, and got to test it outdoors on the 10/22, the bolt rifle, and compare it next to the Stratus. Also, got the rest of the pics taken, and the weights of the various parts. Most of this hadn't been done because I was workin...

Re: Blast Baffle Material

Samson, I'm seeing what you mean. I built my multi-cal can entirely out of Ti, including the blast baffle. It runs on a 9mm SBR, a .308 with a 20" barrel most of the time, using full power loads, and several ARs, mostly a 16" barrel and a 10.5" pistol. It has a 2" blast chamber, ...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Had fewer pics than I thought, but it's a start. First is the tube. This is the rear end, showing the threads. I went with 28 TPI. I just threaded the tube's bore, going until they "peaked out" and noting the depth I had cut. Then, it's a simple matter to take the bore ID, add twice the de...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Ok, been busy, what with life and all that's in it, but I finally got this done. Well, mostly. It's made, and it works. As mentioned, it's 6" long, 1"OD, all titanium. It weighs in at 5.3 oz. It has 7 K baffles, and the muzzle cap is a baffle. The tube is .070" wall, and when I get it...

Re: Blast Baffle Material

You might be confusing "best material" with "good enough material". For most diy builders, the cost and difficulty of "best" are not worth it given the other "good enough" materials will probably last forever with their specific usage. Considering 17-4 specif...

Blast Baffle Material

There seems to be several different ideas about what material is best for the blast, or first baffle in the stack of any given suppressor. Of course, this changes with caliber, full auto desired or not, etc., but, in general, something tougher is generally desired. For rimfires, and many centerfires...

Re: Planning 2 more F1s

Well, BCJ did a thread on a mini suppressor, and in it he referred to a larger, but still compact suppressor, that was pretty quiet, at least hearing safe, but compact. I want a dedicated compact suppressor of my 16" AR rifle. My multi-cal suppressor works on it, but uses an adapter to QD to th...

Re: Planning 2 more F1s

Ok, sorry about that. The question was about the wall thickness. I searched as best I could, the search function here doesn't seem to work very well, at least for me. But, I see where a lot of people will simply ask if they can build a "5.56 can with a wall thickness of xxx?", and that's i...

Or, at least not one opinion anybody is willing to share.

Not asking anybody to design my suppressor, just thoughts on tube thickness for my application.

Planning 2 more F1s

Ok, I know, haven't even started my rimfire suppressor yet. But, spent a day last week shooting with that multi-cal suppressor I built on my .308 bolt gun, and words of the friend I was with echoed in my mind: "When you have a suppressor, why would you shoot without one." So, I need more o...

Re: Going to do a rimfire can

Ok, well, when time permits, I can get started. I got the longer threaded barrel made for the Bersa pistol. Just took a piece of barrel from cutoff, turned it to size, chambered it, threaded it and installed it. It works, and tried with a factory unit the shop owner has. Barrel diameter won't allow ...

Re: Question about time between completion and engraving

Ok. We'd always done engraving for F1 builders, but while they waited, so all was good.

So, I guess all that has changed is that now an 07 is required.

The owner decided to renew it, so we're still GTG.

If we do let the 07 go, guess we'd just have to quit that service.

Re: Question about time between completion and engraving

So Bender, the new ruling now makes engraving an NFA item a Manufacturing operation? As in, someone SBRs a receiver or complete firearm, and then takes it to an 01 FFL for engraving after the Form 1 comes back approved. Previously, this was legal, as a gunsmithing operation, as was actually building...
