Re: Integrally suppressed Vepr

I was working on something similar for a Saiga 12 for a while, put it on hold for other projects because it wasn't working very well. I used the factory thread protector pressed into an aluminum front endcap, because I wasn't sure if fine threads in Al would hold up. As it is, the cap starts to slid...

Re: Using Aluminum Spacer and End Caps In 5.56 Form 1 Build?

5.56 gets really hot unless you're shooting at bolt action pace. The aluminum spacers will heat up faster and expand more, which I think would make them more likely to buckle under compression. I think everyone will tell you that the use of aluminum for a centerfire caliber outer tube is a bad idea....

I would be more worried about distortion of the part during the heat treat process, depending on the material involved.

Re: "Hollywood Quiet" .22 host - barrel length questions...

Well, it's either that your bulk ammo is going supersonic, and you're hearing the sonic crack reflected off downrange items, or if it's subsonic, it still has higher velocity than the CCI standard, and therefore more gas pressure from more powder. Bulk ammo seems to be supersonic from my 10" ch...

Re: "Hollywood Quiet" .22 host - barrel length questions...

Since you're intentionally starting with subsonic ammo, the shorter barrel by itself will not help. If you were starting with something supersonic, then the point of the short barrel would be to prevent the bullet from reaching supersonic speed. The reason your bolt action is more quiet than the M&a...

Well, I think part of the reason the site has less traffic lately is that there's been an impressive body of knowledge built up, and also because the senior people here point new members to search old threads when they ask old questions over again. I tend to agree with that, but if most of the ideas...

Re: Fed Judge rules against KS 2A Protection Act--silencers made in KS

Thanks to Wickard v Filburn, the federal government can easily regulate just about anything under interstate commerce, even if there is no actual interstate commerce going on. Filburn was growing crops on his own property, and using the harvest on his own property. Until the Supreme Court decides to...

a_canadian- looks to me like one of the Ruger Lite models of their 22 pistol, aluminum sleeve over a tensioned thin steel barrel.

OP, I had a similar problem with a form1 .223 can, and a stout wave washer fixed it. Haven't had the same issue with my 22/45, though.

Re: Feds convict 2 Kansas gunmakers for making NFA items under KS law

Any attempt to use a rational explanation of 'interstate commerce' is futile in the face of Wickard v Filburn, one of the worst decisions the Supreme Court has ever made. If they can twist the actual meaning of the term into applying to a man growing wheat on his own land, and using it on his own la...

If you're honest, video won't make you do much different. If you're not, you will find ways to work around any system put in place to monitor your actions. If the article is true, then I'm glad someone went public with it, but hopefully at least some of this was by email instead of just verbal in th...

Check this one out, I made a shameless copy for a 10/22 charger and about all I can hear is the bolt clacking and the strike on the target.

Re: Monolithic baffle stack

I did something similar with a 10" core on a Charger takedown. Same method, half from each side. Despite the length, and not using a centering bit, it was off by only a few thousands at the center. I think I used a 5/16" hole in fear of baffle strikes with such a long core, so the bore did...

Re: Leidenfrost Effect for Next Generation Baffle Surfaces?

If there's going to be a leap in silencer performance, it's probably going to come from a combination of improved CFD (computational fluid dynamics) programs and metal 3d printers. I couldn't begin to guess what the baffle shapes would be, but my feeling is that with more simple shapes like the cone...

Re: Leidenfrost Effect for Next Generation Baffle Surfaces?

That's a fascinating video, but the effect comes from the phase change at the interface between the liquid and the hot surface. Won't do anything where there's nothing but gas working. Also, anything that comes from very small shapes affecting the gas flow could get clogged pretty quickly with carbo...

Re: Paging Mr. Whittle, Mr. Frank Whittle...

Just some guesses here, but drag increases with the square of the speed, and this thing isn't going to be breaking any speed records. The increase in weight of a retracting landing gear would probably be pretty significant in such a light aircraft, which is 172lbs empty. That means higher takeoff an...

I would be frightened about the play with the bushing to slide fit, did you end up with an oversized bore to account for that? Never seen anything like that before, though.

Re: Can't mill and thread a tube and adapter or end cap - no mill - use a fake suppressor?

Looking at the link you provided, I think it goes from the muzzle back as a barrel shroud, not from the muzzle forward. Even if it extended forwards, the rows of holes drilled in the sides would really limit your ability to open the bore to a usable diameter and put any baffles inside. Last, I don't...

This would have been useful yesterday, when I seized an endcap while cutting threads and test fitting. Although, not sure it would have worked an...
