Re: Why Suppressors work: REAR CAP & TUBE - (I)
As I never share my ideas or working plans with others this is not my post for sure. I'm certainly not supporting paul here, but this got me thinking. This is the forum for those who share ideas and results when we make our own suppressors. If you state that you never intend to share, why are you i...

Gorgeous tooling and jigs there.
"Tool and Die" men are at the peak of the machining world for a reason.
And your CAD work is pretty nice too.
Thanks for sharing.

All your doing here is making me want to get a mill..... All of the sudden, "just a lathe" doesn't seem good enough for me anymore. cool stuff. You're doomed, you know. Oh, it just starts out with a lathe. Then you have to get a mill, a semiuniversal indexer, gotta have some o...

Re: Supressor Baffle Pics!
When I was in aerospace we bent and formed a lot of 6AL4V sheet titanium. It was generally annealed dead soft, then hot formed with a LOT of pressure. One part was about 3"x7"x.125.and the press used was 10,000 tons at 1400 degrees F. This was to put a 30" or so radius along the 7&quo...

Here's a better picture of what I was talking about.
You can make the inside space as large as you need, within rational limits.
Better late than never.

Re: K Baffle Vent Jig
In aerospace we lived and died by jigs and tooling.
We had jigs to cut titanium sheet parts with a hand router and then drilled with a hand drill, bypassing the milling or stamping step completely.
A good jig is a work of art, and that's what you have here.
Bravo, sir.

1. For the money, around $500.00 -$700.00 range, you can find via eBay or local an American iron, an Atlas 618 lathe....In an NRA gunsmithing volume there was an article by an Alabama gunsmith who wrote about his using this small lathe for many small tasks such as threading a .44 mag barrel. Not th...

Trust me when I say that you don't want to try anything important until you've been doing it awhile.
Practice on junk parts or just pieces of steel.
Because this is one of those things that can only be learned by doing it.
I scrapped a few things I meant to scrape.

I scrape a bit.
The key is "take it nice and easy".
I gouged the work a few times before i figured it out.
You REALLY don't want to do that, trust me.

Re: Wanna K Baffle but aint got a lathe?? NO PROBLEM!!
I noticed that Pitbull Kustomz had 31 previous posts listed. So I went looking. Among them, about 6 months ago, he mentions sending off his form 1. So it's likely that he did indeed do this legally. A troll or poser probably wouldn't play the long game, posting details like that. I hope that he wasn...

..... but I think most machinists immediately calculate the "real" nominal and setup a symmetric tolerance. In the 1" tube ID example you provided I'd see 1.001" +/- 0.001"... That's what we use to do when we programmed the CNC's at Northrop, with a "not to exceed dim ...

Re: Example of Starter Atlas 618 Lathe
I have a 618 which I use (a lot) for small parts that need high RPM's. That being said, I found it too small for a lot of the firearms work I do. The lack of significant spindle pass through was the biggest problem. I wouldn't use it as my only lathe unless there just was no way to have anything big...

As to mills, get the biggest/heaviest one you can. I have a MillRite, about 3/4 the size of a Bridgeport type, and I often have rigidity problems. I've got my eye open for a bigger one, but I also live in both a literal and machine tool desert. My lathes are a South Bend Heavy 10 (x24") that I ...
