Ok looks like it’s magnesium aluminum alloy, some type of anode.

Re: Aluminium with hard rod inside?

Only a test piece, looks like a k baffle but is really a miniature goblet  , for my kids. Only took 5 minutes. Not planning on making multiple, just one and if I like it the more to follow. Didn't center hole it as it was to test if I wanted to pursue making from aluminum. Cuts like butter com...

Re: Aluminium with hard rod inside?

Pm me your address I will send you a piece. The piece machines fine(facing it) just couldn’t penetrate the center rod to place a center hole. I thought maybe core was hardened and rest was built up( grown) around it. But it appears as hard as steel. It won’t pull out, I tried to separate the K with ...

Re: Aluminium with hard rod inside?

Was planning on anodizing the unknown alloy , and destructive testing it. Wanted to see how crunchy the anodizing would get it. Found acid 33%, 850ml which diluted should give me around 1.5 liters $16 shipped, which suffice for small parts. Will setup a 3D printed impeller assembly to keep the...

Re: Sub $1k lathe including shipping 8x16 with 5” chuck 1.5” pass thru

eBay Seller gets a few but they sell out. With a 34T gear you can cut imperial threads. Amazon has some metal 34 tooth gears for RC cars that can be bored out to 12mm to fit. A keyway needs to be filed/ dremel tooled in and you can have a metal 34t gear for under $8. I added some flanged ball bearin...

Re: Aluminium with hard rod inside?

Wanted to compare weight vs 17-4.
Might use a few 17-4 k’s up front then followed by aluminium anodized k’s down stream.
It’s for a 22lr pistol.

Last 2 form 1’s using e-file came back in 15 days. 8)

Aluminium with hard rod inside?

Was going to make a few K baffles, and was unable to start a center hole. So I decided to part it off and start new one. This is what I found inside http://i.imgur.com/qkuMOGL.jpg http://i.imgur.com/gRiV3Zc.jpg Not sure where I got the aluminium. But rod inside is very hard. Anyone seen rod like this?

Re: 1st suppressor build.. Advise on tolerances. .22lr pistol

When anodizing aluminium going from type 2-2.5 could the dye be added at type 2 before continuing to type 2.5, or does the lower temps and reduced acid concentration start the smaller cell formations of of type 3,( which is hard to dye) when you start the process. Just thinking a pulsed current sour...

Re: 1st suppressor build.. Advise on tolerances. .22lr pistol

Looks like you got it sorted out. I think you can go shorter on your form1 but cannot go longer without making a change with ATF. I am building a 1” for 22lr with aluminium tube, 17-4 baffles just thinning them out after first blast baffle to cut down weight. Edit. Looks like aluminium baffles anodi...

Re: question on design, blast baffle or brake?

Can 1 less volume in first chamber due to muzzle brake. Can 2 you still have a blast baffle you just cant change it, and probably won’t work any better then another cone. Can 3 more baffles of good design = less noise. Muzzle brake adds sacrificial brake and helps mitigate POI shift without suppress...

Re: Sub $1k lathe including shipping 8x16 with 5” chuck 1.5” pass thru

Thanks for info! The 1mm pitch is what I like for this lathe with a 2mm lead screw, it’s close to 25 tpi. I am using .065 tubing. I can engage leadscrew anytime the threading tool is in position. Really quick to set a zero and cut each pass without stopping machine no dial needed. Had to make a bush...

Re: Sub $1k lathe including shipping 8x16 with 5” chuck 1.5” pass thru

I got use to the dial, much faster. No need to stop the lathe, just return the carriage to your zero mark and start a new pass. I usually cut internal threads in reverse, cutting outwards so no worry about stopping on a gnats a$$. I was wanting to cut 28tpi or 32tpi for end caps but with the 2mm lea...

Re: Sub $1k lathe including shipping 8x16 with 5” chuck 1.5” pass thru

Ok, lathe has a 2mm lead screw and no lead screw dial. Well cutting 1mm pitch threads the lead screw can be engaged any time no dial needed. The half nut can only engage when threads are aligned which would be every half turn of the lead screw which is every 1mm. The position of the threading tool j...

Re: Sub $1k lathe including shipping 8x16 with 5” chuck 1.5” pass thru

Will do, I still have cover off and tuning unit up. I am currently working on a chuck mounting plate for my 6” 4-jaw to fit this lathe. It has 2” pass thru, then I will hone out the spindle the rest of the way for just over 1.5”. The compound slide would be much smoother with a ball bearing installe...

First 4.25 inches are 1.675 rest is under 1.5 but can be honed to allow 1.5 to pass.
