Larger dia tube over baffle stack?
Have any of you tried a larger diameter tube over a normal sealed/welded baffle stack? I'm considering doing this, with a few small vent holes at the blast baffle, to use the space between the stack and outer tube as a secondary chamber. My hope is to pressurize that chamber, then bleed it back into...

Re: Lathe purchase
the G4003G is what im looking to purchase. I have found a few machines used in my area that are larger but for the money i think i would rather buy new and give up a few inches. I think that would be a mistake, based on my own experience. You give up a lot of capability with smaller lighter machine...

Re: 9mm/300blk silencer
It's not really bad now, but the first round pop annoys the crap out of me, and from what I see online, is very common even with most commercial cans so I am thinking about doing a BLK specific build, which would also let me reduce the suppressor bore size more, which may help a little bit there to...

Re: aluminum or thin chromoly?
I've found the TT style inserts with the smallest tip radius work well in Ti. The negative rake stuff is considerably less effective. I run relatively slow with HSS in Ti, but turn about the same speeds as carbon steel with TT inserts. Ti generally isn't difficult to cut, it just gets hot easily, so...

Re: aluminum or thin chromoly?
D cell Maglites. They are way thicker/stronger than needed for 9mm though, so you can remove about half the material from inside or outside.CMV wrote:.

Re: aluminum or thin chromoly?
I turn Ti dry, no coolant. Most of that is done with carbide tooling, with some HSS used for special shapes.

When you say erosion, are you concerned about baffle erosion from firing, or corrosion of the tube?

Re: 45 acp rifle silencer
How are you going to cut those? Is this a serious question? A lathe. Meaning, how are you going to cut the radiused cone? Radius turning attachment? Form tools? or ??? Still wondering about this, if you've figured out a method to cut radiused or frustro cones on a manual lathe? Or are you using CNC?

Re: 45 acp rifle silencer
No angles. AR15 gas ports, ported parrels, etc. It really doesn't matter if the ports are in grooves or lands, or in between. Gas cutting doesn't show up as leading in the barrel at first, until it's really bad. Accuracy suffers long before leading shows up in the barrel, with powder coated bullets ...

Re: Help with lathe, 13x36 Clausing
Hmm, sounds to me like you're thinking about it right, and the concerns are valid. If you have concerns about the damage, and are willing to wait a while longer, pass and wait for the next one in this size range. For a couple hundred dollars more you should be able to find one like this without dama...

T-Rex: I picked 45acp for cheap subsonic jacketed ammo, I Won't ever shoot lead bullets. Your build looks very nice - have you shot it with the ports blocked to see the difference(hose clamp covering them perhaps)? That would be very interesting. I really like those 80% baffles, but I envision larg...

Re: 45 acp rifle silencer
The same goes for porting the barrel. Once the suppressor is removed, you're not likely to use that firearm, until it is returned. Yondering has a valid point, but it's negated by the use of PC cast bullets. +1 to everything you said except this. Powder coat helps with ported barrels and low pressu...

I really dislike ported barrels.
But, that may be partly because I like to shoot cast bullets and am fond of accurate guns.

Re: Help with lathe, 13x36 Clausing
One thing I'd want to know before buying it - what is the max speed? If it won't do at least 1,000 rpm I'd pass; that would limit your capability with some of the more modern stainless materials and with carbide tooling. A lot of older lathes will only do 500-600 rpm, and are working hard to do it,...

Re: Help with lathe, 13x36 Clausing
Mr fixit, as long as you're willing to take a chance on the feed issue, that lathe seems reasonable for the price; that's about what it would go for around here. Re: Help with lathe, 13x36 Clausing
Not that that isn't a decent lathe, BUT I wouldn't pay that much for that machine. 3 reasons - 1) as has been brought up, the power feed issue has trouble written all over it. If it is the lead screw that would also likely effect cutting threads 2) Look at the spray paint job. That would indicate t...

Re: 45 acp rifle silencer
I can't speak to your 45 ACP application specifically, but have noticed that larger blast chambers seem to have more first round pop, but quieter subsequent shots, compared to the same baffles spaced out more evenly through the suppressor with a small blast chamber. That is with simple 60 degree cli...

Re: possible alternative end cap mounting
How thin depends on a number of things, like blast chamber size, baffle type, etc. But, as a generalization, your proposed dimensions for SS would work fine in 7075. I'd have no problem making that can in .049" wall, if it were mine. I've watched a threaded .100" wall 7075 can work on 308...

Re: Endcap design question.
Gunny, if you don't mind me picking your brain a little on that - did you try a straight 60deg cone in the endcap, or a radius/frustro cone, etc, or? Have you tried making the endcap a cone (i.e. not flat externally)? Seems like that might be bad for sound but I don't know.

Re: possible alternative end cap mounting
Why would it need to be a thick aluminum tube for a subsonic 9mm can? The dimensions you're using for SS would be fine. Step it up to .065 wall if you're concerned about it. 147gr 9mm subs are same pressure as 115gr or 124gr standard loads. All standard load 147gr (& a lot of +P) are subsonic -...
