Re: Synthetic & Natural Diamond Turning Tools and Inserts
The biggest problem with diamond is that it really doesn't do well on ferreous materials. As I understand it this has to do with carbons solubility in iron, basically iron will erode diamond pretty quickly as the temperature rises.

Re: A-TEC CMM4(6) Rimfire Suppressor Lead Deposition
the distributor says it is not meant to be taken apart. That is odd, part of the benefit with these suppressors are the the ability to adjust the length by adding or removing modules. But they must be cleaned quite regularly or else they seize up. Most people just set them up to the desired length ...

Re: Quieter 300 Blackout
The fastest powder I have used with 220's is N110, N105 could possibly work, but I don't like to get too close to maximum without measuring pressure. Sadly the round is too short for it to work with pressure trace in most guns. But the difference in charge weight is insignificant, so I haven't bothe...

Re: Pistol vs Rifle
I've yet so try a can that was louder on a rifle than on a pistol. The can might be more effective on a short barrel, but it's so much louder to begin with you will never get less sound. I can think of two reasonable explanations for OP's experience: 1. The round is super (or trans)sonic out of the ...

Re: Sten MK II Silencer
This isn't rocket science. The Sten silencer is large enough for simple M-baffles, a friend of mine made a dozen or so replicas this way and they worked just fine. They were made for the Kongsberg-barrels with threaded muzzle, this secured the barrel to the silencer and provided better alignment.

You should do the same comparison for elevated temperatures, it doesn't take that much heat for SS to beat aluminum.

Re: 6061 vs Full-Auto .308
6061 is a joke for anything needing to be strong in any direction . . . several alloys carrying 2-3x the strength Really? 2024T351 has only 15% higher yield strength than 6061T6. 70xx can indeed achieve twice the yield strength, but it is more expensive and harder to find for many. But 3x? I'd like...

Re: "The Expanse" If you like SciFi
Thank you for the tip, it's not bad at all. The half-assed way they deal with low/zero-gravity is a bit annoying, but since most of the action takes place in those conditions it's hard to get around that problem without a massive FX-budget.

Re: 6061 vs Full-Auto .308
I don't think fatigue resistance is that important for spacers, the outer tube should take up the bulk of the radial stresses. So the major loading should be compressive which is less of a problem. That being said I don't think 2024 is a poor choice as long as it's for moderate use. For full auto ce...

Re: 6061 vs Full-Auto .308
Just to be clear, I do not advocate the use of aluminum for high rates of fire. It's doable, but requires much more of the design and might not save any weight as the strength-to-weight-ratio drops below that of SS at appr. 500F.

Re: 6061 vs Full-Auto .308
none are made in the USA the largest consumer base for suppressors in the world The US marked is shaped by the tax and paperwork, the use of high-capacity semi's and a fixation with tactical equipment, all which favors extremely rugged and long-lasting cans. Once you look past these factors everyth...

Re: 6061 vs Full-Auto .308
All materials suffer from fatigue to some extent, not just aluminum. If they can make airplanes (the safest form of transport) from aluminum you can be pretty sure that fatigue isn't an insurmountable obstacle.

Re: 6061 vs Full-Auto .308
Aluminum works fine for slow fire with rifle rounds, but unless it has steel inserts it will erode the baffles. And erosion increases with rate of fire. Where silencers are free this isn't a big deal, but if you have to wait 6 months and pay 200bucks for the stamp it quickly becomes an issue for mos...

Re: Pistol silencer for 300BLK (subsonic)--will an accidental supersonic round destroy it?
Supersonic rounds should not affect the can in any way. Don't know if hot loads can be a problem, but if so it's the muzzle pressure and gas volume that's the issue and not the bullets speed.

Re: Optimum muzzle velocity for subs?
There is no real optimum speed, slower will always be more quiet: http://www.silencerresearch.com/bulnoise.GIF The reason for this is that air flow around the bullet will be higher than it's actual velocity, so even if you stay below the speed of sound the flow around the bullet may exceed it. This ...

Re: what projectile to use in 300 WSM for deer subsonic
With 1:11 I'd be surprised if you will be able to stabilize bullets heavier than 180grs, but you should dig around to see what others have done. As for load development I recently introduced the concept of "critical charge" which is basically the smallest charge that could produce a certai...

Actually these were loaded to the old CIP-pressure of 46.4ksi (it's currently at 43ksi) and fits in my 686 without any problems. The velocity is also probably higher than normal due to a 0,003 barrel gap. I won't deny that it's hot as hell, but it matches published reloading data and pressure ring m...

What twist do you have? Standard is 1:10, which pretty much limits you to 180-200grs depending on the design.

Re: .357 in a 9mm Can
The burn rate of the powder is in itself insignificant, by the time you reach the muzzle it's only the amount of gas produced that matters. And while all powders are different they are all in the same ballpark when it comes to gas production. But muzzle pressure alone isn't everything either, one mu...

Re: .357 in a 9mm Can
Maximum pressure and muzzle pressure are not the same, the 357 holds a lot more pressure so for the same barrel length the muzzle pressure will be higher. And I don't think FA will increase the pressure in the can significantly. However, for a can to withstand FA use it must be able to withstand the...

I don't there is much to gain from a steady-state run with a stationary bullet. I've tried running dynamic sims using Dassaults CFD, but it was way to complex for me. I've switched to Autodesk since then, but haven't tried the CFD so I don't know it's capabilities. But a steady state sim is not usel...

Not surprised. It looks absurdly over-engineered, and in my experience narrow channels and complex "labyrinths" do little good. Are there any "Rube Goldberg" designs out there that actually work well?Samson104 wrote:for the cost and weight its no where near worth it

It might be machining at it's finest, but unless it also turns lead into gold I consider it a design nightmare. Can you imagine taking that one apart for cleaning?

The constant was derived empirically from QuickLoad-simulations. Basically it's a constant that is related to the energy and gas volume produced by the powder. Different powders will undoubtedly behave somewhat different, but as a rough rule of thumb this should be fairly safe. The actual value I de...

Re: .303 Brit Subsonic Project Help Needed
Sounds exactly like my 200grs Lee behaved, I had no problems with baffle strikes but they were clearly coming at a slight angle at 50meters. Accuracy was still decent though, enough for some plinking at least. But we're into the gray area of stability here, so your results may differ. As for the con...
