Re: Do I need to keep a copy of my stamp with me?

I lived in VA for a number of years and have seen it happen, they were detained if they had reason to believe it might be illegal until they were have shown proof. Happened to me at shooters paradise(r.i.p.) and as soon as I produced the forms I was sent on my way. They/you were probably wrongfully...

Re: Do I need to keep a copy of my stamp with me?

Actually, no need, I found the citation. 18.2-308.6 - Possession of unregistered firearm mufflers or silencers prohibited... It was repealed in 2009. So... as far as I can tell, Virginia does not have an active "innocent until proven guilty" law regarding suppressors. While a police office...

Re: Do I need to keep a copy of my stamp with me?

Bottom line, no matter what state you live in, if law enforcement discovers that you have a silencer without your paperwork you will be arrested for illegal possession of a class 3 weapon which is a federal crime. Good advice, and that may be the case, but it's a shame, because you will be illegall...

What a shame. There are other videos out there where the police cave and give the person their weapons back. I guess it depends on the officer(s).

Re: Do I need to keep a copy of my stamp with me?

VA also has some oddball stuff about magazine capacity and some firearms with threaded barrels being "assault weapons". I'm assuming the following was passed and is on the books but I don't know for sure. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?951+ful+HB1796+pdf 9 Be it enacted by th...

Noting for the 3rd time that I believe as a practical matter it is a good idea to have your papers... and to show them to a LEO if he asks... ... With that being said, what does the law actually say? ... This is the law I read as well. I just wanted to see if there was any law out there that I was m...

Yes... yes, and YES!!!! If I'm not being clear.... YES!!!! You absolutely NEED to have "on or about your person" the documentation that verifies you have signature approval of the tax paid transfer relative the NFA items you are out and about with. Just in case I'm not clear about this......

Re: Build thoughts for low cost long term builds

Have you considered doing part of it yourself, like the baffles and the endcaps, and then having someone else do the tube for you? For instance, after your paperwork comes back, you could go out and buy a piece of tube and some round bar for the baffles and endcaps. Make the baffles and endcaps on y...

Re: Ebay sellers gone full on nuts.

The auction I am looking at is a single threaded tube (open on both ends) and a single end cap that is threaded for the tube and the barrel. Funny thing is... I actually have a legitimate use for this. It would be great on an AR with a short barrel and long handguard. I could put this on and shoot u...

Re: Anyone have a picture?

I know this is an old post... There's a lot of talk about wipes here WRT the GemTech Aurora. From what I understand, the ATF allows users to change wipes as part of regular maintenance. However, that cylinder in the Aurora... are those really wipes? In this thread it sure sounds like it, but to me i...

That's a good idea. You could also use the shortest bit possible - probably a screw machine length.

2) Once I build a tube and serialize it can I destroy the baffles and manufacture a replacement set of baffles under the same form 1 or do I have to submit another form 1? (this is in case I want to try a different baffle stack design later down the road) Pretty sure the answer is no here. Check ou...

Question about welding, anodizing, and parkerizing

Let's say that I weld two similar pieces of aluminum together, and then I get the part "hard" anodized flat black. Will the finished product have a consistent appearance across both the two pieces and the welded/filled area? Or will the welded area appear different? Assume that the welded ...

Re: aluminum mono core for .300BLK ? Carbon tube?

I would feel comfortable engraving the endcap. Usually the tube is engraved, but if you're using a carbon fiber tube, that's not really feasible. The ATF does "strongly" recommend engraving the tube vs. the endcap, and they give two reasons: 1) it is the accepted industry standard, and 2) ...

Re: Has this already been done?

No way, your spacers are way too thin to maintain stack integrity after first shot. Subsequent swaps will lack on integrity and the whole system might become a mess. There are no Physics, DMLS and/or any other “fancy” concepts related to that besides “talking”: It’s just the metal mechanical behavi...

... Yes because by firing it you are in the eyes of the ATF firing a complete silencer all the extra parts are a unregistered silencer for each part. Brain hurts from trying to comprehend the vastness of absurdity infecting the collective minds of the BATFE which must be twisted far beyond the comp...

Re: O ring in closely fitted monocore 22LR can?

I think I understand what you're saying now, but I do not know the answer to whether or not that would be acceptable. In theory it sounds good, but I just don't know. However, I'd be a little worried about getting the tube off after it's been shot. The residue and fouling might make it difficult if ...

Re: Has this already been done?

Still working on a drawing but I had a chat with a friend on the phone. He seems to think that if the suppressor is safe to function with a few baffles left out then those baffles would count as extra suppressors under the idiotic ATF govthink. In any case, I'll probably give the tech branch a call...

Re: O ring in closely fitted monocore 22LR can?

First off, once the can is completed, you cannot repair it as per the ATF. "Persons other than qualified manufacturers may repair silencers, but replacement parts are “silencers” as defined in 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(24) that must be registered and transferred in accordance with the NFA and GCA.&quo...

Re: Has this already been done?

It is my belief that if the parts are not in the tube they are extra and therefor become "spare parts". I would suppose you would need to put some type spacer in to firm up the rest of the stack. Anything used to do this would become a suppressor part and therefor extra when removed to re...

This just gave me an idea. So, lets say I built suppressor X with 15 baffles inside it. That i the number it was designed and built with. But is there anything illegal about leaving some of the baffles out of it when using it? That is precisely where I was going with this. I'm really glad you broug...

Re: Has this already been done?

The legal problems with tunable cans based on what you're describing, as already mentioned by Dr. K, would be extra parts laying around, at least under U.S. law. I've thought about this, too. Let's say I bought a GemTech suppressor with 6 K-baffles, and when I'm at the range, I take one baffle out ...

I looked at a web page with test results of a heap of .22 cans, all differently designed, varying from $200 to $900 and the greatest difference in sound reduction was 4db's. I know what you mean. I think there are a couple lessons here. One is that there's more than one way to get the job done. Ano...
