Re: Can anyone recommend a machine shop in NC?
Cant agree more. "I have the machine tools to save money on buying guns/cans/etc" is just a lie I tell my wife and even she doesn't believe it. I do this cause I enjoy it. There is not such thing as saving money in the NFA relm.

Re: Form 1 45 ACP can with booster
The tube is 316 stainless 1.375" OD / 1.245" ID. I turned the middle down to 1.320" just to relieve some weight. I had planned to turn it down to 1.3" in the middle but when I got it in the lathe I second guessed myself and left it at 1.32"

Re: Form 1 45 ACP can with booster
Unfortunantly I dont have a postal scale. I tend to over build my cans and this one is no different. My CAD program says that it is ~18oz which seems about right. The Octane is 12oz and they are using aluminum for the tube and endcaps. When I calculate the weight difference if Id have used Aluminum ...

Re: Form 1 45 ACP can with booster
Thanks for the compliments guys. T-Rex that line is where the booster housing screws into the tube. I made a thread about the Nielson device a while back with good pics of it. I did make some revisions since then and added an o-ring. And yes the major OD is 1.375". This actually worked out well...

Form 1 45 ACP can with booster
Finally got my 45 can done today. I went through about 100 design revisions in CAD before I settled on this one. The baffles are tsudo-CTA style but with smooth 60* cones. Including the nested one inside the far endcap there are 11 baffles. Yes 11. Overall length is just 7.75" with the booster....

Re: Reamer/bore size for 45 rifle can?
Im no expert but I bored my 45ACP baffles to 0.495". That's 0.022" per side. I think that's plenty. I Did my 22 can at 0.0265 so similar 0.021" per side clearance. Did my 30 cal can at 0.360" so a mite bigger at 0.026" per side.

Re: Rifle length gas system with suppressor?
I have an 18" gun with a rifle length system and it runs fine with with my 30 cal suppressor. It is a converted side charger but I still get a good spit of gas in my face from it. Joe Bob Outfitters has $30 adjustable low pro gas blocks so Im gonna get one and turn the gas down on it.

Sure. The Piston OD is 0.75" and overall length is 2". The OD of the flange at the front is 1.0" and it is 0.125" thick with 10 cuts through it that are 0.250" diameter each.

Re: Critique my Neilson device
Hmm I hadnt considered the gas seal at the piston. Never seen a piston endcap with an o-ring in it. I just cut the clearance in the cap to have about 0.0015 per side to facilitate free movement. With the lengthwise cuts in the piston Im not sure if an o-ring in the ID like Gunny showed would seal. I...

Joe - the plan is to insert a set screw or pin from the front to index the piston with. I havent done it yet, cause I honestly had forgotten. It will be done before complete though.

Re: Making an AR15 quieter, the weapon not the suppressor
Ill second the JP captured recoil system. I installed it in my blackout and it really helped. The most noticeable sound with the can was the spring twanging inside the buffer tube till I put that in there. As with all JP stuff, its expensive but worth it.

Re: Critique my Neilson device
Thank you for the complements. The spring is kinda an experiment in this. Very little information available on the spring weights used in the industry unfortunately. From what Ive seen though the spring needs to be fairly stiff. I choose a spring from McMaster that is 66lb/in and 1.5" long. We ...

Critique my Neilson device
Ive had my F1 sitting here for my 45 can for 2 months now while debating material choices. I wanted to use Titanium but Ive never machined Ti and its expensive. Were expecting a baby in a few weeks so my wife wouldnt let me spend $250 on Ti anyway. I had all the stainless needed except the tube so I...

Thank you Delta. I've seen first hand how well the dip works. Not worried at all about this can filing up.

Re: F1 22LR K-baffle can
With the 50/50 dip mixture I saw no reason to make this one take apart. I cut about 1/5 the mass outta it by thinning the tube to 0.035 and not needing thr extra material for threads.

F1 22LR K-baffle can
I am almost done with this can. It is completely 316 stainless and to be welded up shortly. These are just simple K-baffles with simple ports. Dimensions are 1" OD and 6.5" long. Baffles are 0.050" thick except for the first which is 0.075". Tube is 0.035" wall. I know peopl...

Re: form 1 an 80%lower sbr
There was no discussion of the state that the lower was currently in with the examiner. I specifically told him it was an 80% I machined and he said ok. I had already completed the lower into a pistol and engraved it before I filed the stamp so there was no issue there.

Re: form 1 an 80%lower sbr
FWIW I F1'd an 80% lower to SBR. Entered all my trust info, made up model name, made up serial number and sent it. The examiner emailed me a few days later asking if this was an existing firearm or to be built. I told them it was an 80% and they just said ok. Got the form back no problem.
