Re: 5.56 build log update on pg 2
I did a form 1 can in titanium with cone baffles ( .30 cal ). Initially I was on the fence about clipping them and ended up clipping them and glad I did. BIG difference in suppression just by my ear. I have no idea if clipping a freeze plug would yield the same results but clipping does make a diffe...

noisecatcher wrote:I have had people tell me the tone of the can will vary depending on the length.
I think the tone can vary using different construction materials ( tube / baffles ) as well.
I bet the guys with the spiffy instrumentation know for sure.

Re: What is the effect of making a can longer?
I have seen AR rifle length buffer tubes used as a suppressor for .22 rimfire ( no baffles) that actually worked well. It's volume did the job of containing the gas and releasing it.
Adding baffles slows and strips off heat.
There is a balance between size & effiency.

Re: What is the effect of making a can longer?
Cooling and slowing the expanding gas = suppression.
Since a longer can with more internal space (and likely baffles) the 2nd can should / will be quieter.
A recent example of this is the new line of suppressors with screw on / add on modules for added noise reduction.

Re: What's a good length for a Form 1 when you haven't designed the can?
If in doubt go big.
You can always make it shorter but not add length or parts.
Slowing and cooling the gas makes it quiet. Larger volume = controlling gas better if your baffles are not as efficient as a smaller can.
That being said I might form 1 a high volume 22 rimfire can.

Parallel machined spacer to mound against barrel shoulder~ http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w560/jkh62/titanium%20308%20can/NCM_0023_zpstpaclebc.jpg Instead of the spacer, you could just relieve a little bit of thread in your end cap, then you wouldn't have an extra piece to lose. I have been using these boring bars for over 25 years and I have never had any twist using their carbide bars or steel bars. Carbide will crack / break and never twist. HSS bars can bend but I have never twisted one.

Re: Buyer beware of Advanced Armament/an ongoing experience
Most companies target their market & support efforts. In the suppressor industry there are several great ones that focus on the civilian market. Now that Remmy owns AAC it does not appear the civilian is not their target market or support. I own an M4-2000 from the 'old' AAC. At the time of purc...

Have a photo of the cutting bit you used? I'm finding that it is hardest to machine the inside of a cone baffle that is less than half an inch wide. Ranb Criterion ABT-250A / solid carbide boring bar http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w560/jkh62/titanium%20308%20can/NCM_0023_zpsuabnfdsn.jpg

Re: Completed titanium .308 caliber build
Can you give any details on machining the inside of the baffles? How thick are the baffles? Thanks. Ranb Credit to whomever created / drew this up, I found it somewhere on this forum. I simply modified the diameters to fit my tube and kept the angles the same. I did keep a heavier wall thickness an...

Definitely hard to tell with the phone video, but the delta looks promising. Also had a chance to try any subsonic ammo? I will get a real camera and try is again and in open ground. I never had any interest in .308 subs , its why I have one of these...... http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w560/j...

24 TPI on tube with adequate wall thickness.
I thread the tube to the target thread depth and turn the cap to fit the tube.

Re: Completed titanium .308 caliber build
Just returned home from the range after test firing with a smile on my face. This trip I was able to properly attach my suppressor to my rifle and run some ammo thru it. My spacer allowed me to tighten down the suppressor against the barrel shoulder as I intended. Test firing with and with...

Re: Permanently attach Titanium to Stainless ? how?
I would braze it on with 1100F-1200F solder paste. I would not braze titanium unless you have it shielded somehow...... Over 800 degrees F and titanium picks up oxygen and nitrogen contamination from the air and the contamination goes through the metal and not on the surface. TIG weld it with a goo...

Re: Permanently attach Titanium to Stainless ? how?
Permanent attachment per BATF rules blind pinning was allowed, if they have not changed the rules. If you have a titanium suppressor drill thru the mount into the barrel, press in a titanium pin then weld it closed / over it. If you have a stainless steel suppressor do the same with a stainless stee...

Awesome to finally see you get time to finish it up, Cal50! Definitely interested in the performance. As mine is definitely following the same design as yours. Did you use rod when you welded? and how much argon flow did you find optimal? I used titanium rod on the 1/4" holes I filled in. The ...

If you cast very much look into getting a PID, it makes temp control a piece of cake. I run 2 20lb pots at a time, one heating up after refilling while casting from the other.
