I used aluminum .250 rod 10 inches long. Turned down 3 inches to the id of my lands. I was leary about scratching my bore.

Thats stuff is a monster. Make sure you test fit all the parts before you apply it. We use a .003-.005 slip fit. Assemble and thread it second for bore alignment.

Instead of welding it you could use 680 locktite. We use that for placing wear sleeves on parts. You need high heat to remove it or just machine the sleeve off.

It would be a 2 point mount so additional stress would be supported by the mount 3 inches down the tube.

I see alot of holes drill/milled into thread mounts to save weight. My question is if you would turn a groove in between the inner (barrel) threads and the outer (tube) threads how thin can the resulting web be and still be safe/strong? If I fire it dry every 200-300 rds. If I fire it wet, as soon as I get home.

Check the gibs on your compound as well, similar thing happened to mine and snugging up the compound gibs eliminated it.
