Re: Price of suppressors IF Hearing Protection Act is passed
Don't know if it will explode instantly, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding silencers out there. Even among silencer fans. First people need to learn that cans aren't reserved for poachers and arm chair commandos, that takes time. A lot of people will avoid anything new and different, compl...

Re: Price of suppressors IF Hearing Protection Act is passed
chopping of barrels ... which is usually a bit more $$ than threading alone It shouldn't cost more, it literally takes 30 seconds with a hack saw. The rest of the job is the same, once you have the barrel in a lathe it's just silly not to redo the crown anyway. I'm not making wild-ass guesses, arou...

Re: Price of suppressors IF Hearing Protection Act is passed
Lever actions and ultra-lightweights can pose some serous challenges, but a large percentage of bolt rifles can be threaded. At least if you chop them a couple of inches, which most people seem to prefer. Even with a lightweight can the added weight makes the gun unbalanced unless shortened a bit.

Re: Price of suppressors IF Hearing Protection Act is passed
Once the silencers go down in price, so will barrel threading. It's not rocket science, nor does it require a gunsmith with 10 years of experience. But if you risk destroying a 500$ can and force the customer to wait 6months for a new you gotta be 100% sure. If it's just a matter of re-threading the...

Re: Price of suppressors IF Hearing Protection Act is passed
You don't have to be poor to not want to spent 500$ or more on a silencer. I'm guessing the tax and red tape is enough to turn most potential buyers off. If those obstacles are removed the marked will explode. I suspect there will be a lot of people who are more than willing to pay 200$ for a lightw...

Re: Price of suppressors IF Hearing Protection Act is passed
I would expect more lightweight cans made for hunting with prices in the 2-300$ range. If you look to Europe this is what you'll find most of, not inconel cans rated for full auto.

Re: Life Expectancy
If it's a ferrous material ... it is possible to design one with an essentially infinite fatigue life Newer research indicates that this isn't true, it appears that all materials have a finite fatigue limit. But it is incredible hard to test as we're talking years of high-frequency vibrations, not ...

Re: Albuquerque police accused of altering body camera footage
If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to hide, right? Careful, that's the argument for warrant-less searches. I think the police has a right to some "privacy", if every second of your day is up for scrutiny you will probably be too afraid to do a mistake to do your job effe...

Re: Leidenfrost Effect for Next Generation Baffle Surfaces?
Honestly it's hard to imagine anything that would revolutionize silencer designs. While there are many distinct challenges involved the general physics is well known. The heat and fouling involved also limits both usable materials and the design.

While the physics is fascinating I fail to see how it can be applied to silencers. But as always I'd love to see someone prove me wrong.

Re: How to break the bond of 242 blue Loctite??
242 is designed for cold disassembly with hand tools, but if you put enough glue on a soft part you could be in for a challenge. If so heat or a long soak in methylene chloride should work. Loctite usually recommend 250°C (480F) for disassembly. But as the strength goes down with temperature you mig...

What if the firing pin broke instead? Would you sue the gun maker?

Re: Problem dealing with a LH threaded barrel & a RH threaded adapter to can
LT 242 is a good choice of glue, it's formulated for removal with hand tools. If necessary one can soften it with moderate heat: "For disassembly, shear with standard hand tools and remove with methylene chloride. In rare instances where hand tools do not work because of excessive engagement le...

Re: M&P 9c, feed issue's
Ultra-compacts can be a challenge. The increase in mass has a much greater impact due to the short barrel and low mass, in addition the barrel tilt is more severe, and this movement is not compensated like the rearwards motion.

Re: Question on Heat Treating Aluminum
Heat treatment of aluminum is quite different from regular steel. They are precipitation hardening, meaning they gain their strength by precipitation out alloying elements. Annealing is done by heating and quenching, the increased temperature dissolves the elements and the quench locks them in as a ...

Check with a university (or lab trade school). XRF should handle this sample without any special workup or treatment, AAS or ICP would require the sample to be digested in nitric acid.

Re: Thoughts on grade 2 Ti for spacers
I avoid CP2 in silencers... period. If you have a choice, sure. If you have to buy the stock it makes little sense to buy CP2 , but many work from scraps and oddball pieces. I happened to have access to CP2, so it was either that, aluminum or steel. Since low weight was a major design factor it was...

Re: Thoughts on grade 2 Ti for spacers
Its only advantage is corrosion resistance. Mostly useless in suppressors. It depends. I made the barrel nut and blast chamber spacer for my 222-can from Grade 2, and it works just fine. It has a thermal expansion like steel (1/3 of aluminum) and should have better wear/erosion resistance, so it's ...

EU has Harsh Employment, Mnfrg and Product Reliability Regs. But they have Stricter Liability Limits and often must demonstrate Defect, rather than just Nuisance Suits resulting from Product Misuse. That pretty much describes it. I don't know if US liability laws are to blame, I think the heavy reg...

Moderators cost a lot less overseas (e.g., Finland, New Zealand, Switzerland, UK) but they are considered disposable items there, to be replaced every so often. Disposable (or at least limited lifespan) silencers represents the biggest marked, but you will also find a wide range of heavy-duty cans ...
