SOT Process

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

SOT Process

Post by paper9 »

Question: what is involved with the SOT process? So that a person is a legal maker or manufacturer of silencers.
Thanks

Fill out forms and mail a check. Pretty easy. Order forms from ATF web site. Check your local zoning before getting to excited.

You forgot to tell him about the thousands he will have to pay in taxes, registrations, licenses and fees per year on the Fed level and only he knows what the state/county requirements are.

Those fees are pocket change to the other money he will need. Hell my first silencer order was 60 k.

True but most people that ask this question are trying to find a way around the tax stamp so they are trying to save a few hundred bucks.

I was trying to compare the individual stamp to the manufacture process. Specifically, how to work/build one with more freedom than waiting 6 or so months for the stamp to arrive. From the posts it appears that manufacturing brings about periodic taxes or fees that can be as high as $60,000.

But, frankly from these posts, who really knows.

to be a manufacturer of NFA items, you first need to be a licensed manufacturer of firearms. zoning approvals, local business licenses, tax liabilities all apply to your initial application for a type 07 FFL. your SOT is just another $500 (or $1000) per year tax on top of all of your other operating costs.
