My very first K baffle.

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

My very first K baffle.

Post by paul463 »

Stamp is in hand....... Only took 7 months.

Made the first baffle today, wasn't as hard as I had imagined.
.650 long, .860 diameter. There will be eight of them. 60 degree cone, the cone walls are .060 thick.

Should I change anything before I make the rest of them?

Looks good to me, well done for a first go.

I would suggest that you could save a bit of weight and add volume by thinning it out a bit, cone wall thickness etc. could be reduced by at least a third

Cheers

That baffle looks great. It seems like for the ultimate in weight reduction you could have gone a little thinner on the front of the baffle and add that thickness to the other side (where the cone shape is), but all that is splitting hairs. Great job paul.

Thanks guys.
The project continues. I'll post pics when done.

P.S. It's titanium, so it should be pretty light. Odd stuff to machine though.

It should come out close to 183 grams if my math is right. I can probably shave a little bit more off, but I'm not sure if the work vs the return is really worth it.

ETA, make that 166 grams. I did a little more work to the cones today. :)

I like it. What did you deburr it with? I had a hard time around the ports of Ti K's & eventually went with the small green cone-shaped bit on a dremel at low speed. A regular deburring tool - the kind with the hooked blade that sort of spins in the handle (don't know the right name for it) didn't do much. My Ti ones came out really sharp & needed more deburring overall than any other material I tried.

I used a high speed pencil grinder with a 1/8" pointed carbide burr. That baffle looks a bit different now, I revised some things on it today.

Here are a couple pics of a workaround I did to keep things concentric on my old lathe with beat up chucks.

I was able to do the cone end just fine in a crapped old 3 jaw, just did everything I could without removing it from the chuck, and drilled the center hole under sized. But what happens when I have to turn it around to face it to finished length and do the recess on the face? I have no collet setup and no way was I gonna dial them all in individually in my four jaw. So off to the stock pile I went, and came up with this. I turned the counterbore to hold the baffle and never removed it from the lathe from that point on, so everything was nice and concentric.

Faced them to length, bored to final ID, and cut the recess. Worked slick as hell.

Then I made this little holder to drill the holes.

Get the mill set up, drill one side to depth with a ball mill, then flip it over and drill the other side without having to fiddle with the table position.

Did some work on the front cap tonight.
Made yet another fixture to hold it, because I have no indexer to space the slots.

Faced to length and chamfered.

Cutting the first .125" X .062 wrench slot in the mill.

Cut a slot, turn the block, cut a slot, etc.

Needs a little deburring detailing yet.

ETA, does anyone know why I lose all my links when I go back and edit a post?

Now that was a simple but brilliant way to hold and index!!!

Paul463, thank you for showing such an 'Effing' effective and innovative fixture
along with the great photos.

Finished it up today.
Threaded the tube for the caps.

Stack O' Ks.

Made the front K just a bit smaller to fit inside the front cap.
Image
Picked up the host gun brand new today. It's very first shots were suppressed. :)
Image

The weight came in at 160 grams. The weight of the pistol and suppressor is 4 ounces less than a steel 22/45 by itself. And Federal Bulk has been subsonic out of it so far. :D :D :D

No video yet, but I am very happy with it.

Damn, I just realized I still haven't detailed the slots in that front cap. Excitement to fire it must have gotten to me. LOL

Anodized it today. And made a wrench.

Used water, baking soda, and an old 9 volt cell phone wall wart charger. I tried a 32 volt printer power supply but that gave me a medium blue color. I like the straw gold color.

I just checked the link and it leads to a virus - stoppable if you have the right software. I reported the post yesterday - maybe it will get pulled.

Paul,

Did you cut that small slot in the face to that you could use it for indexing the ports?

Yes. I should have cut the tabs a little taller though, it's kind of fiddly to put it together with the shallow notches.
