50 BMG form 1 finally arrived. Tested, works well.

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

The photo on page 1 is just an empty tube and end caps. I've yet to make any baffles. They will all be 60 degree cones; 6-8 of them. I'm waiting on a new tool bit prior to making the baffles. When the can is finished I'll post video. It will compare bmg to whisper and I hope to have a subsonic bmg load to try in it also.

I heard a rumor he used 3 inch tube at 20 inch length just to have the king in size over your monster

Just the tube, end caps and blast chamber spacer so far. No progress for a long time. I'm very frustrated coming up with a good baffle design that is the right compromise between light weight and strength. In the meantime I'm helping a friend make some silencers on my lathe and working on my SBR collection. The can will be 2 inches by 16 inches when I'm done.

Thanks for the update. I hope you find the design you like. My baffles are as simple as you can get and worked fine. So don't over think it.

I have ten form 1 stamps in hand and yes one of them is for a 50 that will be 16" length, 2.5 OD, still deciding
what kind of steel I want to use.
I'm considering full titanium since it will be dedicated for a bolt action.
When work slows down I will have more time for form 1 builds but as of now I'm stuck making $

Finally getting off my ass and working on the can some more. The spacers, end caps and some of the baffles are done.

Image
The blast baffle. I accidentally cut the outside at 70 degrees instead of 60, I finished and am going to use it anyway. The spacer is .050" thick and about 2" long.

Image

The baffle and spacers mated together.

Image

The jig I made from the left over tubing. The spacer and baffle will be tacked together then welded with a bit of filler wire and ground down to fit into the silencer tube.

The blast baffle will be as shown, but I think I should clip the rest of the cones. Any suggestions on the size of the clips? Thanks.

The cone of the blast baffle is .120" thick, the remaining baffles will be thinner. The rifle only fires about once a minute so I think the can will not get very warm.

While I've been dicking the dog on this project Kitsap County closed the KRRC rifle range, again. The other club I belong to does not allow 50 bmg's. I'm going to test the can with reduced loads (150 g WC860 @ 1800 fps) that have about the same power as my 338 ultra mag, so maybe they will let me test it. I'll also make up some subsonic loads with M33 and 35-40 grains of Red Dot powder. I'll be testing the subsonics without the can to see if they so signs of yawing at 100 yards.

Id go at least 40 greains with the red dot. starting off. I went 35 and was getting 860 fps when I cronographed it. I thougt I was getting 1000 but was not.

I'll be starting with about 40 grains and shooting over a chronograph without a brake or can to check velocity and ensure they are not yawing.

Can is 4.8 pounds, unloaded rifle with bipod and can is 38.2 pounds.

Fabrication completed. Still need to test it. Will start out with a reduced load of 150 grains of WC860 which gives me about 1800 fps. Then a target load of 205 grains then a full load of 235 grains. When I get some Red Dot I'll try some subsonics if they don't yaw. My usual range (KKRC) is shutdown for now so I'll have to ask nicely if the RO's at the Poulsbo club will let me use the reduced loads at their range; they don't allow 50 BMG due to noise and claims of berm damage

There were some complaints about the sound quality so I re-edited the video hopefully with higher volume.
