223/5.56 can questions

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

223/5.56 can questions

Post by tigman250 »

I am looking to build a form 1 suppressor for an AR-15 in 5.56 and want to cantilever the expansion chamber over the barrel to keep my overall length as short as possible. Is there a formula for figuring out an optimal expansion chamber volume? This will put my first baffle fairly close to the muzzle, I assume inconel is in order? Can I get good suppression out of a cantilever design with about a 8" X 1.5" tube? How many 60deg stepped baffles and what spacing will I need ahead of the first baffle? Should the first (Inconel) baffle be 60deg and stepped as well? Sorry for all the questions, so much to learn and only 6 months to learn it in LOL!

No there is no publicly available formula's or specifications on determining optimum blast chamber sizes.

Seriously, your questions are as common as gas stations.

Have you read the hundreds of threads in this forum that discuss all these type questions?

I have been a member for years, these are my first posts, I have extensively used the search function, all the threads I come up with have similar response quantity that I have received. Even using the filters you either get a million threads most of which don't pertain to what you want to know or by tightening up the filters you only get one or two if you are lucky......not to mention all the words in the search have to have at least 4 characters, so if you use ".223" or ".22" or "5.56" the search ignores them! The best I can hope for is that I stumble across a build thread that is similar to what I am talking about, I don't see many people building cans that cantilever the expansion chamber back over the barrel, so was hoping to get some input from someone that has experimented with it or at the very least a link to a thread where it had been discussed. I want to get this right, probably the only can I will ever build or own, so I apologize if my asking a direct question about a specific style annoys you or clutters up the forum.

It's frustrating because most people don't search or read, they just want their questions answered on the spot.

I know I discussed it at length a couple years ago, but no idea where the thread is.

Try searching under "REFLEX" as that is the appropriate term for what you are describing.

Look at my threads. I did a big build write up on what you want.

For direct thread I have stuck to around 1.5" spacers on the blast chamber, for QD mounts I have make them just large enough for the longest muzzle device to fit, which typically means closer to 2".

Griffin and Allen/OPS are the main 5.56 OTB suppressors on the market. Griffin's only can is 8.6" and the OPS (12th) and Allen model 5 are 8.875" which I think are their most popular. They have other models from 6"-8.5". Looking at reviews or tests of those cans may help you decide on length.

I am thinking about doing something similar and I posted about it here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=132694

The layout projected was 8 7/8" OAL and extended 4 3/8" past the muzzle device. I was kind of afraid to go shorter than that because of performance concerns. With that length I could fit 6 cones with .5" spacing in there. I had mocked it up with a 7.6" and 8" OAL tube and I could only get 4 baffles at that length, not sure how that would sound. Ryan

Along with the above google search help I usually hit the IMAGES search before the WEB.

Once you find a referenced web page:
If you are using Chrome, up in the right, below the red X, are 3 lines. Click there and then click "find".
Type in some keywords and Chrome will highlight them for you so you don't have to read entire pages to get to the point.

With short words, you can typically add a * to the word (on either end) to pass the "4 character minimum" filter. E.g. *223 or 223*

Unfortunately, it won't help with the "this word is too common" rejection. :(

In that instance you must use google (thankfully this site is indexed by google; not all are)/
