Form 1 45 ACP can with booster

Finally got my 45 can done today. I went through about 100 design revisions in CAD before I settled on this one. The baffles are tsudo-CTA style but with smooth 60* cones. Including the nested one inside the far endcap there are 11 baffles. Yes 11. Overall length is just 7.75" with the booster. It is completely constricted from 316 stainless steel. I used a SilercerCo Osprey/Octane piston cause it was just easier that single pointing to a shoulder in such a small hole. I still need to clip the cones so dont beat me up on that. I have not gotten to shoot this yet but hopefully next weekend it will fire.

NICE!
I'm using the same material on my 30 cal can.
I already figured out how to part the SS316 but knowing more is better what did you use to do it?
and how long are those baffles they look shorter then what I had in my mind and I plan on using 60's to.

Yes, very nice job.
What Dia, 1.375"?

Question:
What is this separation line for?

Is there another chamber, to the rear?

Where did you get the booster setup? Was it one you had or you got it seperately? I have been looking for a setup with the end cap and spring for a while but i cant find one anywhere.

The booster spring setup is SWR/silencerco.
Not only does he mention this but I have everyone they make for my Octane 9 HD
Good call BTW. Why reinvent the wheel.
We'll I lied, the fixed mount I made rather then buy for my 300 BLK subs.

So please share more in depth details on your can.

Yes I know it's a silencerco. My question was whether he got it from a can he already owned or if he purchased a seperate, complete booster from some place.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

T-Rex that line is where the booster housing screws into the tube. I made a thread about the Nielson device a while back with good pics of it. I did make some revisions since then and added an o-ring. And yes the major OD is 1.375". This actually worked out well cause at that diameter the sights on my 1911 are technically under the can but Il gonna re-zero to a "pumpkin on a post" sight picture like I use in NRA Service Rifle and I will still be able to use them as normal. viewtopic.php?t=132093

The booster piston is from SilencerCo for the Osprey/Octane as stated. I purchased the piston locally and bought a spring from McMaster Carr that fit the specs I needed. It seems to be perfect as long as the spring rate is not to light/heavy.

As far as working with the 316 stainless, I had no issues with it. Use carbide for profiling and youll have no trouble. I have no coolant system on the lathe and it still doesnt give me trouble. Parting I used a HSS 3/16" parting blade ground sharp with a slight angle to the tailstock end of the bed so that it drops the part. Rigid setup and correct feeds/speeds youll have no issues with it. I love turning 316 honestly. Its like most turning O1 drill rod I think.

McLarenross, nice, nice, nice!

You are justified in being proud of you result.

Do you intend to make a video for your admirers to hear?

Best.

Thanks Historian. Yes once I get it running I will video it and post some them. Hopefully it doesnt embarrass me. lol.

If you wouldn't mind I would like the design specification if you don't mine. Some like to keep there stuff a secret but was wondering if you would like to share. Also are you planning on doing a test video to see how it preforms?

Again very nice.

I found out yesterday and today that faster is better with the 316.

What is the length of your round stock on the baffle before you start your 60 degree step down angle?

Thank you for the information. One of these days I'm going to have to get the equipment to gather and build one with some help to work out the details. Also what equipment did you use?

Very nice job Sir.....What did the weight end up?

Unfortunantly I dont have a postal scale. I tend to over build my cans and this one is no different. My CAD program says that it is ~18oz which seems about right. The Octane is 12oz and they are using aluminum for the tube and endcaps. When I calculate the weight difference if Id have used Aluminum for those parts I come up with 5.5oz.

A virtue!

I champion such wise engineering practice. Consider the Via Appia in Italy
that was engineered 2000 years ago 1000 times over stress ( compared to continual NE
pothole generating roads that are 2 - 5 times over stress)
which still has sections in operation today.

Best.

Were you working with a manual lathe or a CNC?

One of the nicest F1 pistol cans done here. Good work.

This was done with 100% manual machines. I don't even have a DRO. Good ole hand wheels all around. Thanks again for the compliments guys.

Great machining, congrats on a well made F1.
What are the specs on the tube if you don't mind.

You machined the middle section down, to what Dia. did you go?

Again, Great machining on manual lathe.

The tube is 316 stainless 1.375" OD / 1.245" ID. I turned the middle down to 1.320" just to relieve some weight. I had planned to turn it down to 1.3" in the middle but when I got it in the lathe I second guessed myself and left it at 1.32"

I have a similar build planned, but am planning on a full aluminum build with a silencerco booster since I have a few extra.

Can you discuss why you chose stainless over aluminum?

It looks great!

I choose stainless for 2 reasons.

1. With the current rules once its built your done. No modifications, no repairs, no replacement parts, nada. Stainless is a lot more robust that aluminum and will last a lot longer. Stainless can also be made much thinner than aluminum and be much stronger, albeit still a tad heavier. Also I use a lot of lead cast ammo so I wanted to be able to use "The Dip" to clean my baffles.

2. I had almost all the stainless on hand for this already. Just had to order the tube.

I originally planned to make this can from 100% Titanium but it turned out to be cost prohibitive.

On another note, I got time to clip the baffles today. I clipped the middle 8 baffles and left the blast baffle and end baffles symmetrical. I did this cause Ive heard that it promotes accuracy. I did this to my centerfire can aswell. No idea if it was beneficial on this can or not.

Image

After I clipped the baffles I put it back together and said screw it, Im shooting in the back yard. I have a bunch of woods behind my house so the direction of fire is safe. I shoot suppressed 22 in the yard all the time. I was worried the 45 might be too loud for the neighbors though. I did video it for yall to see. This is on my 5" 1911 with 230gr hard cast over 5.0gr Bullseye @ ~800fps. Before this I tested with a single round a few times to see if it cycled and it locked back every time so I went for 5. Here is the video.
