My reflex project. I had been sitting on the stamp and solvent trap for a long time, this is actually the very first of the Diversified Machine Ti tubes. However I had a also large Liberty Freedom and another larger form 1 arrive in the meantime and never got around to building this as a result, I decided to go with a reflex set and wait for that to be made. The delay gave me enough time to make cones also.
Reflex mount for Griffin QD type Form 1 cans. Allows mounting of can on both the reflex mount and Griffin's QD standard mounts (which I already had)
Machined cones, clipped and lightened. VHT on the cones
Visual display of how it will mount on both the Griffin Brakes and DM Reflex mount.
Weight 19.4oz, pretty respectable given this is huge (1.625"x9") and uses Steel ends. Ti ends would drop weight down to 16oz. My similar volume Liberty Freedom Ti (1.5"x10") 308 is 23oz.
Building a smaller all Ti one with Valve retainers and I am projecting it to come in around 11oz.

Form 1 Reflex Build
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
Nice build Sir! I saw it just has six baffles, how does it sound compared to your non-reflex F1 can?
I also like DM Reflex mount but seemed its not QD mount like AAC, surefire or YHM. How do you prevent the can not screw out?

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
Griffin cans use 1"-20unf thread and there is a taper on the rear of the adapter and the rear of the Brakes. Very nice and secure without moving parts.
Going to try to hit the range this week and see about results.

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
Looking forward to a range report!
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
This is the most fun I have had behind a AR15. Can is incredibly pleasant to shoot. I only got a chance to shoot two cans today as I did not bring proper tools and couldn't get one can off. Extremely hot here.

The reflex mount definitely has a quieter tone.
And you have the back sweats something fierce
Great job!

Yep... 99 and muggy and we have needlessly build up the backstops to the point where we get no airflow. Soaking wet from head to toe after shooting for an hour.T-Rex wrote:The reflex mount definitely has a quieter tone.

Sounded way better than I would have ever expected. I ordered some more mounts and I thinking about a 5.56 that is 7.5" Overall this time, I think I can get the weight down in the 11-12oz range.

Are there photos of the baffles?

Where did you get the stainless reflex brake?
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
It is from the machinist that does solvent trap parts Chris ([email protected])Suttererman wrote:Where did you get the stainless reflex brake?

for some reason the 2 pics of baffles didn't show, the others did. Now I see them all. looks good.c5_nc wrote:The ones in the first post are not showing up for you?

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
You've done great experimenting with baffles, mounting and spacing.
Have you thought of adding drain holes in some of the baffles?

In some of the earlier versions it not appear to make much of a difference. The stack fits tight and is very difficult to remove in this case.T-Rex wrote:You've done great experimenting with baffles, mounting and spacing.

Range test today. Fun times but lots of video to go through. 300blk and 308, reflex and standard mount, against a Liberty Freedom Ti.

Ended up stacking up pretty good against one of the top performing commercial cans. Small difference in performance across the reflex vs non-reflex mount configuration.

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
how much difference did you notice in blowback with standard versus reflex mount?
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
I didn't notice a difference. Both unnoticeable but same baffle design with .275" bore is massive blowback.mr fixit wrote:how much difference did you notice in blowback with standard versus reflex mount?
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
I like the sound of this one, How did you hold the baffles to lighten them?
What is the width, depth of the clip?

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
If i understand you correctly, you are saying that you didn't notice a difference in the amount of blow back between the reflex and direct mount with the .30cal bore, but the same design with a .275 bore (I assume for .223/5.56) has a massive amount?c5_nc wrote:I didn't notice a difference. With the .30 cal version, did supers make any more blow back in 300?
I got my approval for my .30cal can, and am trying to finalize the design. I am wondering if the reflex area is worth the weight on an 8" AR 300aac, in regard to blow back and suppression.
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
The dm reflex brake is 4.4 oz vs the the standard griffin qd mount 3.8. The length of ti tube needed adds 2-2.5 oz maybe.
I didn't concentrate on the blowback so did not notice but I can pay more attention to that next time out.
The impression I got from reflex cans in general was the reflex area was less efficient than the length past the muzzle. For example a 9" reflex can that extends past the muzzle 5" may perform like a 7" oal suppressor. In this case this can was noticeably quieter than a sdn6 though.

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
1st off, beautiful work!
Why did you go w a pair of 180* oriented notches instead of the (3) @ 120* offset? They offer both asymmetrical and quasi-symmetrical cross-bore turbulence.
Also, the short muzzlebrake offers higher total usable volume. The "barrel extension" isn't a true reflex b/c it simply contains the gas in a tight column for several inches b/f allowing the plume to disperse. A reflex directs the gas rearward along the barrel to expand and cool prior to reentering the boreline. The muzzle extension defeats this process.
Also, how do you prevent the baffles from sliding forward using the shorter muzzlebrake? Do you use a spacer? Or just allow the pressure to force them forward during firing?

Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
It is a reflex, the Stainless break pictured is internally bored and threaded, it goes back 3.25" over the barrel. In the videos, that is why it much shorter overall length when in reflex mode, the same barrel was used in reflex and standard mode.whiterussian1974 wrote:1st off, beautiful work!

Here is one the "reflex" endcap, maybe it will make more since seeing the barrel.
Re: Form 1 Reflex Build
I aligned them by eyeball before pressing them in. On the dual clips, it is not clear if there is a need for alignment or since they are asymmetrical they could just be installed randomly.fastfire wrote:I like the sound of this one, How did you hold the baffles to lighten them?

I don't have measurements on the clips, but they appear to work well even though they are smallish. I knew I could enlarge them but not close them back up, and this was done as a starting point. Since the sound is there, and there is no POI shift I am leaning toward leaving them as is.
