Threading questions

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Threading questions

Post by RMears 45 »

I am planning to attempt a form 1 can soon. I am gathering some tools that I don't have now. 1" rimfire and 1 1/4 medium rifle cans are the normal diameters. My questions are :
1. what are the typical threads per inch on the end caps for these 2 cans.
2. where to purchase the tap and die set for the two sizes.

Hi

sorry to spoil you day but you will have to single point screw cut the threads on the lathe, it is not that hard to do went you try

Best of luck

Well heck, I was afraid you was going to say that. I am a beginner at best on the lathe and mill. But to re-phase the question what TPH should I learn to turn for these two sizes.

I do all mine 24 TPI, seems to be just about right and I have done many, that said it would depend a bit on the material that you are using and wall thickness.

Mine are mostly aluminium, with the 1" 22 cans being around 1/16" wall thickness.

Trust me it is not that difficult , check out u tube etc. and you will be so pleased when you have done your first thread, just remember to go slow on the speed (70 RPM) and take light cuts, say no more than 0.005" per cut.

Cheers

It depends on the thread/pitch of the host gun. 99% of 5.56/223/22LR guns are 1/2"X24. 99% of .30 guns are 5/8"X24.

Jeff the question was what to do the end caps not the muzzles

Also if you check out the AR platform (556/223) most are 1/2" X 28 TPI

As Enfield stated, single point threading will be required.
I, too, use 24tpi for caps.
I skim .005 from the tubes inner wall, prior to threading. I find it allows baffles to slide in easier.

OOPS, and yes, critical typo on the 1/2X24!

I prefer to use 28 tpi for any thin-walled parts, like tubes, since the depth of thread is less than coarser sizes. Could go finer, of course, but I'm usually set up for 28 tpi for muzzle threads anyway.

24 TPI on tube with adequate wall thickness.
I thread the tube to the target thread depth and turn the cap to fit the tube.
