I am cutting and threading a 10/22 barrel at 4". Should I worry about barrel flex at that short length. 4" out that barrel should still be above the .75" range and it starting at .92" with at least a 5/8 shank at chamber. Should i use a cathead just because I have one available and error on the
side of caution. I would really hate for a baffel/end cap to take " an arrow in the knee".

Support it, and index on the bore. Those are known for having the bore not quite line up with the O.D.

Whatever you do, do not use this as a training video.

Redneck Rifle Barrel cutting, really crude!
Re: Cutting barrel for 10/22 sbr
Hahahaha.. loved it, very un-educational. Why do I think he cut the barrel so that his duck tape could lay flat on his 24 oz Pepsi bottle. Did you notice his rubber boots with shorts, it must be deep there.

Well, it is finished. We elected to use a 4 jaw and clamp over the level place over the sight cut.

Re: Cutting barrel for 10/22 sbr
I hope you at least made some attempt to indicate the bore. Commercial barrels quite often have bore and OD that are not concentric and Ruger 10/22 is actually known for this. Also they often have bores that are not straight that the path of the bullet is at an angle to the threads.
Please double check alignment before shooting to avoid baffle strikes.
Re: Cutting barrel for 10/22 sbr
We did, just kept playing with the dial indicator until it was .0002 . The bore was about .006 out of center. I have about a dozen rounds the pipe with no baffle /end cap strikes. I hope to shoot some groups today.

Re: Cutting barrel for 10/22 sbr
I threaded a barrel recently that was .025" out of concentric. It was the worst I have seen. Most are close, the average feels like it is .005" over the ones I have threaded.
Re: Cutting barrel for 10/22 sbr
So what you're saying is you need to indicate the bore because even though some are close, there are examples out there off by quite a bit.MartinDWhite wrote:I threaded a barrel recently that was .025" out of concentric. Not to beat a dead horse but I feel compelled to also mention that even if the bore is dead center at the muzzle, it can still be crooked which will lead to increasing misalignment the longer the can is...
Correct way to thread is to indicate across a tight-fitting "range rod" in the bore
Just trying to save someone some grief in future
