Finally got my form 1's -- baffle question -pics added

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Finally got my form 1's -- baffle question -pics added

Post by -molon_labe- »

So I finally got my 2- form 1's back and started to get to work. Started by making a stepped baffle and planned to do spacers out of thin tubing. After thinking about it, I figured I would make the baffle and spacer as one piece. Made all of the baffle OD first as it was easier than doing each one start to finish at a time. Everything is going fine I just have a couple of questions.

The baffles are 303 ss. How thick does the "spacer" part of the baffle need to be since it will still be inside of another tube.

And also, how thick does the tube holding all of the baffles need to be since all of the baffles stacked together creates its own sort of tube? My outer tube will be chromoly, which is clearly stronger than ss.

I will obviously make the threaded area thicker to hold the threads for the end caps, but the majority of the tube will not need to be as thick, I'm assuming. I've been lurking for a while and have kind of gathered that .065 tube thickness is adequate. If that holds true, could I kind of have a "total thickness" between the tube and spacer part of the baffle be .065"? Maybe a little more since they aren't a solid piece? I'm wondering if .040" on each would be adequate... That would be a total of .080 separating my face from chaos coming out of my barrel.

Thoughts?

What caliber will this be for? If it's a non magnum centerfire the spacers can be .040" or so depending on material ,my 5.56 can uses .025"TI.
Also what grade of chromoly ?
as many stainless steels are as strong or stronger than 4130.
As far as main tube thickness .065 works well as long as you use 28tpi threads and thin the body down to .055" between the threaded sections, the spacers don't add that much to the strength of the body

Or make the ends press fit and weld them and the baffles with no spacers and a .055" body

one will be 223 and the other 6.5 grendel. the chromo is 4130, so slightly stronger than the stainless i am using. i'm not using any type exotic stainless...

Those spacers look beefy ...I'd thin them out to .045 to .055"

Are all 14 of those baffles in 1 suppressor?
Definitely thin the spacer walls. You can go quite thin to reduce unnecessary weight.
have you thought about clipping? There is plenty of material to clip the front of the baffle face.
It looks like you chamfered/counterbored the entrance to each bore hole. Not sure I would have done this as you want to prevent the gases from easily moving to the next chamber.

Those baffles are for 2 suppresors, not just one. I do plan to clip the cones, but currently thinking of a way to keep them from rotating and messing with accuracy. I'm in the process of building an indexing fixture to put on my mill, that way I could do 3 clips per cone and then it wouldn't matter if they rotated, but I'm not sure what the general consensus is on that method.

That was from my first mallard this year. My 8yr olddaughter wanted to clean it so she wanted to keep the feet like I do with my turkeys. Off topic, but she used the pocket knife I gave her when she went scouting with me for the first time this year; my grandfather gave me that little buck knife when I was her age as my first pocket knife. Proud poppa moment for sure...

I would not make the spacers less than .050 thickness.Do not use lighting holes unless they are small and well spaced to prevent crush.Making keyed spacers is easy to do but normal stack pressure will keep the ports inline in most cases.A single clip or port creates asymmetry while three just allows more gas to pass each baffle without creating beneficial turbulence. The step baffle without clips is a very good baffle all by itself why add any clips.

Thanks for the input Capt. I'll go with no clips which solves the baffle rotating issue. I've been on a cruise for the last 10 days But get back tonight so I should be able to make good progress this week. I'll post updates as I go.
