Want to build a 2" OD 5" length form 1 for an AK

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Want to build a 2" OD 5" length form 1 for an AK

Post by angelbeast6 »

Looking for a lead on where to find a 5" tube with 2" OD and think walls in either SS or TI. Preferably one that already comes with internal threads.

This will be going on a Century C39 with 14x1 threads.

I would prefer to use a break similar to the SD tactical http://sdtacticalarms-com.3dcartstores. ... _p_65.html

I already emailed Diversified Machine but would like to cover my bases.

Yes, I know that it won't be "quiet." I'm mostly looking for something to take the edge off. a short and fat can.
I keep forgetting it so I'll leave it here for others as well: NFA 304-616-4500

Why not use the SD tactical 5.6" D cell tube? I know it's not a full 2", but I doubt the difference will be significant given you're not looking for Hollywood quiet.

I've been eyeballing these as well. What is the wall thickness? Given that it's intended to go on a 6" AK, I want to make sure that I have decent wall thickness.

IIRC, the SD tactical tubes have a ~30 thou minimum thickness (at the thread relief). The carbon steel ones are welded tube  .

I would not limit the suppressor to 2.00" in diameter.A 3.00" x 5.00" tube would look good and help you with the problems of running a 6.00" barrel. You will need as a minimum of 17-4 or inconel for building materials. Two or three ported cones that are on the thick side is a starting place.I would fully weld the core as this can will glow in no time flat.

Do I notice a bit of sarcasm?...
Because I do have 1.75" between the center of the bore and the top of the front sight... Yeah, I already thought about it.

After doing some research I feel that I might be thinking too much about this. I do want to build it like a tank and I'm going for a specific look on the C39 (Flush, short and fat) but think that 3" might be a bit much (and expensive as s--t)

Not being sarcastic at all. It's a tough barrel length because of gas cutting and the heat generated by still burning powder. A turned and bored piece of 17-4 tube with inconel 60* cones and spacers mig welded should hold. You need to build it like a tank or it will be a coffee table conversation starter in no time flat.

Glad to read that I'm not overdoing it.

Inconel is a bit more than I wanted to spend and I guess that at 3", TI will be as well. Maybe a 2.5" expansion chamber with a titanium blast baffle followed by 3 thick SS cones and spacers.

I don't have the ability to weld locally either :?

Any way I go with it, this thing will be a bit nose heavy.

I'd rather pull my own nose hair out one at a time than machine 3" inconel baffles. I made one out of 718 alloy.....once!

CL, what do you think about a coaxial design inside of the larger OD tube?
You could fit more baffles, in the range of 1.5-1.17", and they'd be lighter and easier to machine.
The blast chamber would benefit from the added volume gained by the coaxial design.

The performance might be better with a coaxial design but you would be making the heat problem worse and drive up the cost.It would in effect be a combustion chamber with a restricted flow in my opinion. You would need the inner and outer tubes made of inconel and the baffle stack would still need to be welded. If you employ only a few baffles that induce lots of turbulent air flow hopefully you won't melt it.With either build the limiting factor is metal sag. This is where good engineering comes into play.By welding the spacers and baffles you help support them from self destruction.

Dr.K
Not all inconel is impossible to machine.By using a high cobalt HSS tools and a oil dipped brush its possible. You must get the speed and feed just perfect or the material will self harden with every cut.I suspect that your minimum turning speed is still fairly high on that magnificent lathe you have.I may add speed control to lower mine to about 30-40 rpm plus gain all the in between speeds.Mine is 70 on a G4003G and 40 on my Rockwell 10.

angelbeast6: First thank you for your service to our country and welcome to the building side. You might need to do some scrounging but the materials you need can be had.Often times simply putting up a want add on these pages or going to your local machine shop will get you donations. The cores should be fully welded but if you can't you might try to thread together the core.

These are AAC M4-1000 / M4-2000 suppressors my thought is this type will hold up longer than a more restrictive design. It may not be very quiet but you should be able to direct the sound direction better!

I was drawing up a sketch similar to this yesterday but has having some issues trying to figure out a method of keeping the inner tube attached to the front endcap.

Thank you. I'm still trying to finalize what design will be most efficient within my price range and skillset. I'm also having trouble finding a machine shop near Ft Campbell.

I was worried about both of these while sketching it out. Also worried about the endcap and inner tube flying off and downrange.

At his point I'm considering:
my original 2"x5" design
3"x5" Dual tube design (seems costly and more difficult)
one similar to a PBS-1 (Would be the easiest to build but potentially the least effective.)

I managed to machine the little beast fine, but I wrecked two parting tools, and two saw blades parting that little demon steel! Managed cutting it with my plasma cutter finally! Told myself it'd be worth paying the tax for a new set of internals, vs. the carnage that 718 inconel brought to my world

There's a couple of areas where my old Atlas can shine. One is the almost limitless threading options available. The other is with the back gears engaged, I can gear it down to just 28 rpm, :)

The micro 223 suppressor I built for my 7.5" AR is 2" diameter x 4" long. It worked surprising well for such a short can and barrel combination. I used 4130 0.065 tube and the mount/blast wall is one piece press and welded in. I have three baffles that are 17-4 SS and a screw on end cap. I made a break to mount it to as an easy wear item to replace.
It lives on the 7.5" and works well

Where can one buy 17-4 tubing? Only places I've found sell in large quantities only.
I'd love to have a few feet of 1.5" x 0.065 wall 17-4 for future projects.

I think the local pixie dust salesmen has that item.I used to buy it locally in 12' sticks but don't see it listed any longer.I'll make a few inquiries and would be happy to cut up a stick if enough people are interested.

I normally buy pipe not tubing. The extra machine time is well worth it.

Since you have a 6" bbl, have you thought of using pistol powders to reload? Or do you only use commercial/surplus ammo?
If you use quick burning VV powders you can combust during the 6" to prevent excess heat generation in the can.
The minimal barrel volume would also mean quicker pressure dissipation in the blast chamber. (As opposed to continuing to burn at slightly slower rate, thus maintaining pressure inside the blast chamber.)
