M48 (spotter-tracer) silencer

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

M48 (spotter-tracer) silencer

Post by ranb »

If I'm able to obtain an M48 upper for my AR-15, I'm going to make a silencer for it.

The Army Ammunition Data Sheet for small caliber ammo says a 110 grain charge of IMR 7383 is used to propel the 833 grain bullet 1745 fps with a chamber pressure of 38000 psi. I think I can safely bring it up to 1800-1900 fps which is my goal. I will probably use a slow burning powder that is less sensitive than IMR 7383; probably 7828 or WC860.

My 50 BMG can is 2x16 inches and weighs 4.8 pounds. It uses welded SS cones and spacers made into a solid core. The baffles are all about 0.100" with the blast baffle slightly thicker. The tube is 0.065" 316.

I figure I should make the M48 can a similar design with slightly thinner baffles and a 12-14 inch length. The same 2" tubing will be used but I think I can reduce the wall thickness about .020" after the blast chamber. Opinions?

SilencerTalk was a place I could disccuss making registered silencers without being told I was a criminal. That is no longer true. http://www.silencertalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=132&t=99273
