Form 1 / Omega baffle build .22 rifle can~

Got my approval for my latest project can. I wanted a high volume can for a .22 rimfire rifle ( M&P15-22 ) . My parameters were all titanium & stainless steel construction. I decided on a tube OAL length of 8.250" with threaded end caps. My tube is grade 9 titanium with grade 5 titanium end caps. Internal baffles are 304 stainless steel.

I always admired the Omega pattern baffle. Its ingenious and also patented so I contacted the patent holder/s and asked for permission which they so graciously granted for my personal project. My internal baffles are near completion and I have to face and thread the tube and make the end caps.

Time permitting I hope get it wrapped up in the near future. That damn work thing cuts into play time.....

Very nicely machined.I noticed the trough modification unique.Must post a field report when all complete.

I cheated and used a CNC with 4th axis which saved me a LOT of hand cranking........

The added weight is less noticeable on a rifle can.
Each baffle is slightly over 20 grams in weight so I will have to see what the total is once finished.

Would you be so kind as to post either some dimensional drawings or the 3D model that you fed into the CNC?

Did you use that file as it is on GrabCAD for your baffles? Or did you apply changes to it, with a few changes the difference in sound reduction is notable.

Good job on the machining, what CNC mill did you use?

Slight changes but nothing major.....essentially the same with a larger volume tube to compensate for any problems I build into it.
Tormach CNC equipment.

(What changes help the Omega ???)

I have seen added side hole porting on a omega variation but nothing really solid report wise for metering numbers.

Not much spare time to cut threads but have my host rifle ready to go.....

S&W MP15-22 with some upgraded parts. I ditched the plastic quad factory rail and put an aluminum YHM quad rail on it its place. MI flip sights for BUIS while my Vortex SPARC II is on the way. Magpul "real" butt stock in place of the thing S&W put on it.

Nice looking work! CNC or not you can always tell when someone takes pride in the work they do.

master work. Having seen master Tool & Die Makers
starting as freshman over ½ century ago I especially
appreciate a Sensei of Stainless.

The only two materials I personally dislike machining are 304 & Nitronic series stainless steel. I wanted baffles, tube and end caps that I could use the "dip" to clean so stainless was my 1st selection and I am liking titanium (except the cost) . 304 was the winner because I had CNC access for this project a free bar of material & coolant on the tooling. 303 is great to machine and even 316 is not bad but 304 has always been "gummy" on tooling. This 304 turned nice and not a huge amount of milling required.

I do most of my work on my Logan lathe, knee mill and rotary table but the CNC saved me countless hours on this project. I still like old school...

Historian I started out with a 12x36 Atlas lathe. If you ever want to play with a cnc mill or lathe just stop by my shop and you can have all the fun you want.

On another note cal50, I can't help but take notice of the large flat at the mouth of the baffle. If this turn out to not be as quiet as you think it should be that would be my first suspect. I try to have no more than a .02" flat at the mouth of the bore on my baffles so the gas gets split down the taper of the cone, the larger the flat is the more horizontal jetting you will get and the cross port flow at the mouse hole will be less effective.
