Design change help needed please

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Design change help needed please

Post by Tracce »

First, a little background. I got a form 1 for a can in cal. 458 that was going to go onto a 458 SOCOM rifle. Before I was able to build the can, I found that divorce papers had been filed on me (I'm a cop, she cheated on me and left me for a 5 time felon. I wish I was making this up). When the dust finally settled (trust me, there was a lot of dust), I no longer had the .458 SOCOM to put the still unbuilt can on, but the NFA trust and stamps for all SBR's and suppressors (none built yet) remained under my control.

Not wanting to waste a $200 stamp, I am wanting to build the can for my Glock 21 .45 ACP (one of the few guns I still own). I am approved for cal. .458 with an OAL can length of 8". The hangup that I run into is building a Neilson Device. Is it possible to build one of these without access to a lathe? If so, how would I go about accomplishing this?

Neilsen device ... one idea.

Disclaimer: I am not a machinist and have never built a damn thing on a lathe but I did visit a web site once.

If you find a commercial LID/LCD that suits your needs it might be possible to thread/adapt the tube to accept an OTS LID/LCD.

Doesn't SDTA sell a booster for the maglite tubes?

Liberty, ebay, and gemtech all have boosters for sale.
The fella on ebay has male 1/2-28 threads on one side and female on the other for 9mm. He may have ones for 45 as well.

I believe bender made the point that it if you are using the gemtech/liberty booster to hold in your baffles its a no no. If you are using a sort of multimount setup then they would not be considered silencer parts. SDTactical does have an adapter to use the gemtech I believe. Calling Bender!

Thank you all, problem solved with y'alls help! I was under the impression that a LID was an NFA item in and of itself. The way y'all explained it cleare that up for me. Build can now progress. Unfortunately I will have to go with a freeze plug baffle setup, as I no longer have any of the tools that I used to. Still, it is going to be fun to finally make my suppressors!

Thanks again!

Why not go with valve retainers? They seem to offer better suppression.
Tubing/spacers can be cut w/ a hacksaw and miter box.
A drill press can always be "rented" from a big box store.

Dont sell yourself short, just because of your current situation.

Anyone have an eBay link? I searched for "neilson device" and "booster" and came up empty.

For .578-28 (.45 ACP):

Didn't see one from the same seller for 9mm, but he's got a .40 s&w to .45ACP version.
