Here are some pictures from my recent F1 build. For those interested, the stamp took 3.5 months.
Here's a link to my previous discussion while I was designing it: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=136138
The cross section as designed looks like this:
My goal was to design a low weight can with reasonable sound reduction. The red muzzle device and orange outer tube create a sealed blast chamber to reduce the peak pressure exerted on the baffle stack. Each baffle has an outer radial expansion chamber.
I made the muzzle device from 17-4PH stainless. I also made a blast shield from Titanium for times when the can is not mounted.
The first baffle is made from 17-4PH stainless, all of the other baffles are titanium. I machined each baffle in a single operation from bar stock. Here you can see a baffle just before the the cone is clip is cut.
Once the baffle is parted off, it is complete. Since all of the critical dimensions are made at once, the alignment is nearly perfect.
Here are all of the parts complete:
Also in the picture is the hand wrench I made for tightening the end cap. I put an 1/2" square drive in the center of it, just in case it gets way tighter than I expect and I need to loosen it.
All seven baffles stacked on top of each other:
The baffles stacked inside of the outer tube:
Fully assembled with end cap installed:
Weight not including the muzzle device is 9.5oz (270g):
Bead blasted exterior:
My SBR with it installed:
My SBR with the can removed and blast shield in place:
I expect that I will paint it black with VHT or a high temp Cerekote, although the matte champagne of bead blasted Ti is growing on me...
I got out and fired it today. With subsonic it seemed to be very ear safe. Supersonic was probably not. I have no other cans to compare it to, so I have no way to determine how good this units actually is. My impression of first round pop was that is seemed very low, but I should do some dedicated testing to see if that's actually the case. I put roughly 130 rounds through it of both supers and subs and it seemed to work great. I'm happy with it.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Phil
Edit:
Added this from my post below to make it more visible.
Here's a download link for a video of me shooting this suppressor.
Notes:
- 1.) I recorded with both a head mounted action camera and an action camera from the side, I accidentally stepped back before shooting so I wasn't as visible from the side as I would have liked. It was still a good perspective on sound from in front of the suppressor. Both cameras were in open mounts to prevent blocking the mic holes.
2.) The first round pop was more significant than I remembered, but not as loud as supersonic rounds.
3.) I allowed the trigger to reset immediately after firing which caused it to blend/confuse the shot noise. If I was doing it again I'd hold the reset a little longer.
4.) I would like to test it in an more open area as I think it would sounds even better.
5.) After FRP, Subsonic sounds really good to me. I would love to be able to compare it to a good commercial can on another 8.5" 300Blk SBR. I don't think it quite qualifies as "Hollywood", but I think it's close and I'm very happy with it.
6.) Gas blow back didn't seem bad at all even when firing moderately fast supersonic strings.
7.) I disassembled the can after 130 rounds and it had a layer carbon on all of the baffles, but everything looked perfect otherwise.
8.) I forgot to record un-supressed shots. Sorry.
