All New 300 BLK PDWSD

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

All New 300 BLK PDWSD

Post by LavaRed »

AR- based platform with short 4" buffer tube. Solid collapsible stock with good cheek weld, 3 position switch block allowing for closed, low, and high pressure. Removable suppressor. 19" OAL without suppressor, 25.25" OAL with suppressor. 7.5" Barrel. Fully foldable. Ambidextrous mag release, charging handle, and stock release.
Suppressor is 8" long, 2" OD, EN16 steel endcaps, spacers and tube with Inconel 718 baffles. Fully TIG welded endcaps. Tube was bored from solid EN16 bar stock. muzzle brake is Inconel x-750 to act as a sacrificial blast baffle. Switch block control carved out of lignum vitae to maintain toughness yet prevent heat transfer to the operator.
Enjoy, and as always, criticism is most welcome :

That rifle looks awesome. How much does the can weigh? I haven't seen a PDW stock like that before, did you make it?

The suppressor weighs in at exactly 2lbs. I did make the stock.
The PDW weighs 6.5lbs unloaded and unsuppressed, 8 lbs loaded with subs, and 10lbs with the suppressor installed.

It's been under construction for a year and a half. Three years if you count development and drafting. Other than personal reasons it's part of why I hadn't posted here. I didn't want to until I had developed something new and actually worth something.

Lava, great build.
No compromise in material specs....... :D
Lovely small package as all grips can be folded, good backpack - vehicle gun.
2" should make it "thud" silent ;-) spacer diameter 1.5"?
Did you think about porting the spacers in 2 places and welding a 45 degree flap to it so it directs the gas clock - counter clockwise?
What design gas-block did you use?
Like the WOOD idea for GB control, but what wood due to heat?
Do you have a more detailed picture of that home made coll. stock?
BIG THUMBS UP....

Capt. Link suggested all those improvements to the stack, but unfortunately it was already welded shut by then.
I used a Paladin Machine block that I got used. I modified it somewhat for my purposes.
The switch was made out of lignum vitae, also known as Guayacan. It's a very rare hardwood, also known as ironwood. I just happened to have a few thick branches of it sitting in my supply closet. Sometimes I surprise even myself.

I'll post more pics of the stock and can specs and everything after I test fire.

I like the stock. Did you take something existing & modify to work or just fab the whole thing up?

I took a Gunsmoke Industries 4" Buffer tube. Then I threw away everything but the spring and tube, and had everything else (buffer, guide rod, etc) manufactured to my specs. The stock is fully mine.

The biggest advantage of this stock is that it is 1 inch shorter than any other similar stock on the market. The gun itself is 1 inch shorter than an MP5SD, and only 1 inch longer than the AAC Honey badger, with a 7.5" barrel vs it's 6" barrel, and standard BCG.

Stack looks great. Mill table has... character
It's welded shut? Did you test any designs prior?

I'm working on a similar platform. Standard carbine extension and reflex with K's though. Primary round to be 240gr cast and coated. Have you found need to mess with the gas, much?

Nope. It's fully untested. I'm going in bravely, so to speak.
I haven't yet test-fired it so I don't really know how it will respond. But the Paladin Gas Block I used has a Low and a High setting. High gives a port size of about 0.11". Low gives about 0.08". Or so. With a 4oz. buffer, I think backpressure shouldn't be an issue.

300 BLK PDWSD Initial test footage

Post by LavaRed »

I test fired the PDW today, single shot, gas system closed. Results were disappointing. I have no metering equipment, but it sounded about as loud as my .45ACP pistol can. I was expecting more like suppressed .22LR performance.

It was a sub, and it was wet-ish. Not purposely wet, but I had sprayed some oil on the inside a few days ago to prevent future rust, and greased the gun's innards with Lithium Grease. I blame that for the smoke.

It's disheartening to hear you're unsatisfied.
Have you tried it outdoors? Maybe, the confines of the room's interior is altering your perception?

Is there anything you can do to improve your baffle stack? Maybe clip the cones or put more ports in the spacers?

Either might work. It's a sealed can tho, so taking it apart presents a challenge.

I guess my ears didn't ring, so that's a good sign. And my yard does have high walls, which would magnify the blast. Maybe I need to do outdoor trials.

Howdy,

I ain't no expert or nothing but I've noticed that shots sound louder when they have something to bounce off of like the side of a house or the walls if your inside. Watching a tv show/movie where someone shoots a suppressed 9mm or bigger inside a room and all it does is makes is a little "peeps" is too funny.

Based on watching the video on my iPhone it didn't seem to be too load, just smokey from the oil. If you can make multiple shots without it bothering your ears or hearing than it should be ok IMO.

I performed a second test, this time with the gas open. On Low setting it would not cycle. I switched to high setting and it cycled 2 shots before dry- firing on the third. Didn't get to test full auto yet.

Ejection was between 3 and 4 o clock, but the second casing nearly fell about a foot to my right. I assume this means I need to lighten the buffer? I'm at 3.85 Oz. at the moment.

Suppression was slightly better with the gas open, but I am hearing a lot of impact noise I noticed.

Advice needed on the cycling.

Thanks
