$350 form1 .22 build

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

$350 form1 .22 build

Post by cdrissel »

Here is my latest approved form1 .22lr build.

It's a DM 1.250" x 6" Titanium .22 kit with a GA checkmated 3-lug adapter.

17-4 radial blast baffle, 4 Ti radial baffles and Ti spacers. All double clipped.

End cap is flash groove milled.

Total cost was just under $350

Nicely done, Sir.

Did you machine the internal 'snorkel' or did you press in
with say a ball bearing?

When you test please post video.

In Paulson's book "Silencer: History and Performance "
there was a description of taking a copper
cleaning pad such as choreBoy, unravelling it and then
twisting into a thick doughnuts. Your cup design would
be a natural to place such copper toroids into each
baffle. Just a thought.

Thank you for showing your successful opus.

Best.

The radial baffles are separate from the spacers.

They are machined (turned on a lathe). First one is 17-4 stainless steel and the other 4 are Titanium

Only machine work I had to do was drill/bore the radial baffles and end cap, clip the baffles and mill the flash grooves in the end cap.

I'm all for building your own stuff, but I don't really get the appeal of some of these solvent trap kits, given the cost and other factors. For that same $350, you could have had a good commercial .22 can that is smaller, much lighter, and quieter.

I mean, it would be different if it was something a guy built from scratch, I totally get the "I just wanted to build it myself" mentality, but the DM and other kits popping up seem like they're marketed as a way for the non-machinist average joe to build a suppressor cheaply. If the price is that high, what's the appeal?

The griffin checkmate QD (which I presume the QD portion added significantly to the cost) is actually 10 dollars cheaper.

Of course it is 1" OD instead of 1.25 and sometimes looks are important.

The Checkmate QD only cost me $75

As far as being a non machinist average joe, I'm a trained tool and die maker and CNC programmer. I could easily make 95% of this build myself but I spend all day in the shop. For the time and material cost it would take to make a one off form1 can I easily earn 2-3x the cost by making parts for our customers. Plus I'd rather not spend my free time and tie up a machine making my toys.

I have not seen too many all Titanium and 17-4 commercial .22 cans for sale for $350. I would not presume that a well make form1 build is inferior to a commercial suppressor.

But to each his own.

No doubt 17-4 and Ti should have better longevity than the aluminum many rimfire cans are made of AND be easier to clean. I think the only question of inferiority would be on baffle shape not on quality itself. I am surprised as a trained tool and die guy you didn't just make your own baffles but understand the dollar/hr value in buying as well.

Ommitting the QD portion puts it well under budget of most commercial rimfire cans as well which is as I suspected.

Agreed to each their own. I have bottom of the barrel commercial cost wrapped up in my 22 suppressor as well but like you used all Ti. Just curious about motivation for me was all.

I put together a DM kit using Ti VSR's and the griffin qd.
It is a little longer and heavier than my father in-laws Griffin.
It is also noticeably quieter on a ruger 22/45
It was put together for about the same or a little more than the Griffin.

I was unsure if it would have been worth it to do the rimfire form 1, but I am happy with it after testing them side by side. Plus cleaning is easy when you don't have to mess with aluminum parts.

I paid $100 for my Spectre II. Deals are out there on occasion sometimes in a package deal or super sale of some sort.

Having said that the silencer looks great and probably sounds just as great.

It looks good man. I love my DM checkmate clone.

As for the "commercial is cheaper" crowd, well that depends on if you have a decent 07/02 around. The last time I checked at my local shop they charged $150-$75 per NFA transfer, plus I would have had to deal with that grumpy old asshole. No thanks, form-1 all the way for me.

DM kits are solid commercial alternatives and I haven't heard one person that owns one regret getting it.

+1 also very satisfied with my form 1 builds using various components from various suppliers and the best of all most of my cans are more durable, multi host, and most important of all quieter than most commercial cans.
