To clip or not to clip, that is the question

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

To clip or not to clip, that is the question

Post by mcrump »

The gun, a 300 Blackout. The parts from Roninpro. I have read somewhere that it is advisable to not clip the first and last cone. What is the general consensus on this?

I've also heard not to clip 1st. I've heard both ways on last.

As long as far endcap is symmetrical all around, I don't think that the last baffle should matter. And the blast is so reduced by the time it gets to last baffle, it should have the least influence on stability.

Clipping the first will affect accuracy. Supposedly clipping the last can negatively effect performance. This is all second hand info.

I do not believe it is necessary to clip the baffles. on a 300 blackout with the right design, and space between baffles the difference would probably be negligible. I believe if you did clip them you would probably not notice a difference, and you might lose some accuracy.

Belief. It's a helluva drug. As in not even once. You can have all the faith you like in simple conical baffles, but upon what evidentiary foundation is your belief based? Plain cones seem awfully, well, 1980's. It's almost 2017. Asymmetrical gas flow distruption is a thing.

Here are some past posts covering this.

And these picks should quantify the necessity of clipping

T-Rex, what can is that second pic? I noticed the vent (drain?) holes in the last baffle, any idea if all of the baffles have them?

It's a SIG 762TiQD

Here's another section (notice baffles 4,5,7 & 11)
Image

Here's a different half that shows they almost all line up
Image

In this pic, the blast cone' s and last cone's holes look 45* out

It makes one wonder why they're in different orientations/configurations. Almost as if someone is doing it by eye. The cone clips appear to line up perfectly, however.
You can see they don't clip the blast baffle, but do clip the last. Also, note the size of the blast chamber, it's almost non-existent. Im sure the drain holes help with that.

This suppressor is why I made this thread. Unfortunately, it yielded little.

Regardless, they cut a bunch of perfectly good suppressors apart :D

Cool, thanks for the info.

Looks like maybe they don't index the vent/drain holes relative to the clips; probably decided it doesn't matter.

It wouldn't be a hard thing to test - clip all but one, then try the unclipped baffle in the first and last to see how your POI shifts. If it doesn't shift much clip the last one.

I think people leave the last unclipped for performance reasons, not poi or accuracy reasons

Not porting the first baffle is for bullet stability the last baffle depends on design. I often will not port the first three baffles on major caliber suppressors if a high rate of fire is anticipated and accuracy is a concern.Having a large exit chamber allows maximum suppression benefit of that last baffle being clipped.A side note is the holes in the periphery of the baffles are for equalization of gases.
