J&S Tac Dies and Plugs?

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

J&S Tac Dies and Plugs?

Post by PepeLapiu »

Hey guys. First post here!
I got the J&S dies. My FP's are from SDTA but I am getting the J&S stainless steel FP's.
Will a one ton break be enough to shape either the SDTA FPs or the J&S FP's?
I am thinking that maybe I could heat up the FP's in my kitchen over to 500°F to make them softer to bend so a one ton press is sufficient.

I ask because with shipping to my location, a 2 ton press would be 4x the price. So I look to get the minimum size press.

i was able to form mine with a 4" bench vice and a breaker bar. no need to heat them up. just drill them first using the dieand the end bore should be damn close to 5.56 diameter.

some filing may need to happen.

Well, does your vise have a 1 ton capacity or 2 ton capacity? Do you mind telling what model it is?

Most plugs available for D cans are around 0.7 oz but the ones from J&S are stainless steel, and they weight only 0.6 oz. So I am going that route.
Also I intend to skeletonize the plugs as seen in the following picture:
http://sdtacticalarms.boards.net/attach ... wnload/522

I figure the holes will not reduce the strength of the plug walls, it will also make for less weight, and slightly more volume inside the can.
I don't know if I should drill those holes before or after I form the plugs.
What do you think?

do the skirt modifications after forming.......

I use a vise for forming my baffles but you can use a bottle jack and a car to make a press. I dont have a press I never needed one. I press bearings etc on machinery with my truck and a jack. just do it on level concrete......

Imagine the flat part of the freeze plug is the part you form into a cone.
Than there is a 'ring' or 'skirt' which makes contact with the tube.
Most of that skirt material can be lightened by making holes in it.
If you send me an email at [email protected] I can send you a pic of it.

Yeah, my idea is similar. Only I would drill holes where you made 'legs'.

Are your plugs holding up? What are you shooting through it? I don't know if I would feel comfortable removing that much material on a rifle can.
How much does a singke plug weight after your diet trim?

Edit: do you know the plug weight before and after?

dont remember the finished weight or the weight reduction its been 9 years since I made them and they are still as good as the day I made them. I have it on an ar15 and only shoot ss109 out of it. rifle is on its 3rd barrel. I stopped counting rounds years ago.
read the build thread the info is in there somewhere

That's strange. The forum I was just on they ganged up on me and told me the steel of the freeze plugs is too soft. That drilling holes in it or sqeletonizing it would cause failures.
Yeah, I'll check out your build when at my laptop.
