Reflex 22lr build for dedicated AR15

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Reflex 22lr build for dedicated AR15

Post by T-Rex »

Another build in the works.
Built-in Muzzle Brake w/ ports venting into over barrel reflex chamber.
Over barrel sleeve is adjustable to vary reflex gas flow.
9 Rugged Oculus style baffles.
End cap incorporates a 1/4" wipe, similar to a Sionics 2 stage end cap (internal retaining ring, washer, wipe)

I used what's on hand so the materials are as follows
Caps are 7075
Outer tube is 6061, 1" Sch40 NPS
Over barrel sleeve is 316 Tubing
Mount/Brake, Blast Baffle, and Wipe Washer are 304
Remaining Baffles are 2024
Wipe is Neoprene (I have 50A, 70A, and another which is super stiff, maybe 90A)

Baffles will be clipped using Rusty's DHC
Barrel OD had to be profiled to accommodate reflex design.
Reflex area will have Chore Boy added to it.

This design will grant me the flexibility of some experimentation. I'll be able to turn the reflex gas off and fire w/o wipes, reflex off w/ wipes, reflex on and no wipe, reflex on w/ a wipe.

More to follow :D

Looking forward to seeing how the internal variations sound.

I'm not going to pretend to know how the 22 with wipes is going to sound.

Seems like there was an old WW2 design that used wipes with 22lr, but can't recall what it was exactly.

I know the inventor of the Delisle carbine/suppressor wanted to use 22lr, but the higher ups insisted on 45acp. Maybe that's what I'm thinking about ??????

I have used the DHC on 5.56 and I can hear a distinct difference from my single clips. Quieter.
Can't wait to see how they sound on 22LR.

Thanks guys. I can't see this design not yielding fantastic results; especially with Rusty's DHC added. The pipe ID is already 1.088 (I know, all the charts say 1.049, go figure my surprise  ) so I'm starting out w/ an advantage over a 1" tube. Also, the Oculus baffles are getting great reviews. I may have one less baffle than the Oculus, but I feel everything else included should hold par, or better.

The reflex portion will be able to answer some questions, provided my porting design lends sufficient gas flow.

I forgot to add that I'll also be testing it w/o any baffles. Just the reflex portion and a wipe, w/ and w/o a hole first cut into it. Who knows?

Are you using over boring of the baffles as well as DHC ?
I tried this before using DHC and it made a difference. Then I tried the DHC and it was even better.

Yes and no. In the past, I've typically used 17/64" drill for 22lr or a letter K being on the big side. This time I went with 17/64 for the brake, 19/64 for the baffles, and letter N for the endcap and wipe washer. While this isn't near Rusty's over-bore dimensions, the smaller constraints of a 22lr design doesn't allow for much variance. Especially when the baffle face has detail and not a straight 60* cone. With the current design, I'm fairly confident I can eliminate the bulk of the muzzle report and be left w/ mostly action noise. Being that the platform's action is a Ciener style bolt carrier, this will surely be a primary source of sound. I really need to get the Taccom quiet bolt kit for this style rifle. I have ordered a bench top mill and should be able to replicate a Delrin barrel collar. The rest of the mods are straight forward enough.

If you can replicate a delrin collar, please make two of them because I'd like one too.

I've noticed that taccom has been out of stock of the collars for months and I am doubting that they'll restock them at this point.

Sorry, Gunny, I haven't even finished it. I've been pretty busy what with fall cleanup and whatnot. I have a benchtop mill on order so I have some things I need to get done before it arrives. Where I'm putting it is right in front of the access to my crawl-space. I need to get inside to do some insulating and such so priorities priorities. Also, a couple buddies and I share a trust and I promised one of them I'd have a 10/22 integral done before Christmas.

I'm slacking, I know

I promise I'll post all info, once I get the time to get around to it.

The 10/22 is just gonna be an 18" Green Mtn .92" bbl chopped to 16+ inches and bored about 5". Then, I'll stuff it full of simple clipped cone baffles and a flush endcap so it doesn't look like anything. I guess I should have said dedicated instead of integral. My buddy, also on the trust, wants to give it to his son for Christmas (who is also on the trust). While it's technically property of the trust it'll be "his" rifle.

The mill is a Precision Mathews PM-25MV. Got a call from FedEx today; the mill will be delivered tomorrow :D
