Same Volume K-Baffle Cans ... Fat & Short v. Thin & Long.

Last club meeting subject topic arose.

The no longer YouTube of the classic PTK
.22 K-baffle 'pellet-gun' quiet can came up which
in turn raised the issue of estimating the internal
volume of his design with K-baffles.

A WAG of his length & diameter + number of K's needed
lead to inferring a notional design of a corresponding
8" x 1.75" diameter can with a few 'fat' Ks. having the same volume.

Would having the same volume but with a shorter can with fewer
K's be as quiet? Quieter?

Our good friend Enfield might someday consider trying
an empirical test.

My opinion, longer will be more quiet.

Basing my opinion that when watching slow motion video and how the gasses leave the barrel and that some of the gas will travel through the baffle bore uninhibited by the baffles. *yes, we know most is affected, but the area immediately behind the bullet is unchanged by baffles because it passes straight through the bore, until the point where it starts expanding and loosing momentum in the atmosphere.

So, longer will perform better in my humble opinion.

That was my WAG and most of the guys.

Like Wallace Simpson in 1938 "You cannot be too rich or too thin" seems
to work for cans too.

You could shorten the fat K's skirt to the thin tubes length. That way you could put more K's in the fat short tube and have better suppression than the basic fat K.

has anyone here done or seen similar designs but in different configuration? ie. say a 1.25" can 8" long vs say a 1.375" can 6" long.

speaking more of handgun suppressors. I have an approved F1 that I keep going back and forth on. my intended use is 22lr, hornet, 9mm (both pistol and sbr) at first I was going for maximum quietness but now that I really think about it is not "optimal" for any of those aside from possibly the 9mm so maybe I should worry more about it being hearing safe yet good across all spectrums.
