absolute maximum level of suppression

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

absolute maximum level of suppression

Post by kutworksinc »

After a conversation over a few beers with some friends this weekend, we started to wonder the same question, and none of us knew, so maybe you guy guys might have an answer.

Have any of the suppressor companies ever built just a monumentally over engineered and oversized suppressor, just to see what the maximum achievable effect is? Like a 6" ID x 24" can. Something to set a benchmark.

Its really just something I've wondered. Not really applicable to anything Ill ever do. Would be a good episode for mythbusters. Can you make a 9mm or a .45acp as quiet as a suppressed .22 with a trash can sized suppressor.

That was a April fools spoof, though on you tube a guy made one about 2' long full of K baffles that was fairly quiet.

The US Navy did have a hazardous environment program. It looked like something out of ghost-busters,about a foot long and several inches wide with a Co2 coupling, tank and hoses. The host was a MAC-10 in .45acp. While it was quiet as most suppressed .22s the mist enveloped operator that would scare the hide off off you.I could see adding a green cyalume stick to make the Co2 vapor glow.

You do reach a point of diminishing returns at around 10 K baffles ,other baffles will vary.

I'd say even fewer. My Phoenix IX is 1.25" x 8", has 5 K baffles preceeded by one cone, meters 124.7 dB with 147 subs, checked on my B&K 2209 and 2204. For reference, these meters register 135.3 avg with SiCo Osprey 45 running 230 gr. FMJ and picked up the TBAC Takedown .22 at 114.3 with 45 gr subs from a 16" bolt gun.

My integral .22 bolt action design, the Sussurrus, meters 104.9 dB with subs. It's 10" ported barrel + 10" Monocore in a 1" OD carbon fiber tube

You wanna hear a funny story?

I named the model of my first F1 suppressor Widow Maker.

Not because it sounded cool, but because of my wife.

She told me if I kept fooling around with stuff like that I would blow my stupid self up.

So, I named it the widow maker.
I don't care what your chart says

Yes.
+1

Dick Culver had a can made by an armourer for the .45.
If memory holds: 1.75" x 8.5". Bored from Al round rod,
bronze flat disk baffles and spacers, steel end cap. Heavy sucker.

When he attached it to his bolt rifle barreled for ACP
the report was that of a .22 from say a DeadAir Mask HD
at the ear.

God Bless him and the USMC.

This topic brought to mind the rule of thumb that has
often been posted that the blast chamber should be
about ⅓ the volume of the tube. So for say a DeadAir Mask
5.1" => 1.7".

Now if for same .22 one made a 10" long Mask one should
think that the blast baffle for the 5.1" would still suffice so
⅓ rule is not absolute.

Somewhere on past posting there was a list of .22 temp/volume
of gas from .22 from which via PV = nRT law an optimal
blast chamber was derived.

Anyone have elaborations of deriving optimum blast chamber for
.22, .45, etc., regardless of suppressor length?
