Have approved Form in hand, but cannot find sources.

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Have approved Form in hand, but cannot find sources.

Post by falman »

A retired machinist, with no access to machinery.
I want to buy the "supplies" (especially baffles) to build suppressor, but cannot find a credible source.

Any thoughts?

I don't recall ever seeing aftermarket baffles for sale.

A lot of people seem to make things more quiet with pillows, oil filters, 2 liter bottles, solvent traps, and or potatoes.

No ready made aftermarket baffles that I know of at onlinemetals but they have supplies.

Might be able to troll the ATF by searching for "ready made silencer baffles".

I haven't seen enough posts to know whether he's asking a serious question or not. My main reservation is trying to figure out how one retires as a machinist and not have any tools and equipment?

Still, 5 minutes and a search would have shown that federal law says manufacturers can't sell baffles. Whether they have an approved form in hand or not.

Sadly, there have been so many 1 or 2 post wonders that come to this forum in an obvious attempt to bait people with questions, is why our replies are usually like what you see here.

falman, it's nothing personal. If you have a legitimate question, we'll try to answer it. Otherwise, see above to the answer to your question in the original post.

But you need to know that most of the people on this board actually machine their parts themselves.

just being the devils advocate, my nephew is a machinist for Exxon Mobil down here in Louisiana, and he doesn't own a single piece of equipment, or have any desire to own any.

I retired as a lineman supervisor. And I still own a lot of equipment. Even though I rarely use any of them these days.

But who knows when I'll need to change the bulb in my street light in my back yard? Least I can if I needed to.

I work in sign business, and Ive changed plenty of HPS and halide lamps and ballast inside lot lights.

I cant force myself to drag out the 6ft ladder to swap a fluorescent ballast in my kitchen....lol

But do you have a bucket truck in your garage?

No, but I could have one at my house in less than 30 minutes if I needed one.

And even though I didn't use a lathe at work, I do have a hobby lathe that is more than capable of making a baffle. I wouldn't expect the OP to have a bucket truck either. But a retired machinist that doesn't have a small personal lathe?

I think most of us agree that we would be lost without our tools and equipment. I guess that's why the OP not having any seems odd to me.

I believe it's entirely credible to retire from a job without any of the equipment at home to perform the job.

The initial post in this thread is looking to buy "supplies", specifically baffles which seems a lot to me like wanting to make your own medicine and asking to buy "supplies" (specifically opioids).

Ask cryptic questions, get cryptic answers.

Find me a credible retailer that sells contraband items and win a prize. Currently a all expense paid stay at a federal facility is being offered.

We have a reputation of being a law abiding resource for building form 1 suppressors. This has never been mandated by the management but by the builders and posters here.Poor, hazardous, and illegal though innocent activities are pointed out for correction. We are not the group that tries to circumvent existing laws.

falman if we are wrong about you call us out on it. Nothing illegal with building a legal suppressor with re-purposed items that require little or zero machining.
The only reason after 243 years the government now wants to disarm you is they intend to do something you would shoot them for!

Fine then tell us what you filed for length/caliber host.

You will still need machine work or some fabrication in any ad-hoc design.Freeze plugs and the use of valve retainers are often pressed into service.

Sure,

Form 1 is for .30 cal, 8.5 length.
Filed for this before a company ( Don't remember which one ) was busted for selling parts later deemed illegal. Therefore, those plans evaporated.

Now down to building something, in another way.
Looking for options.

Google "solvent trap parts".
You will get almost unlimited results for suppliers.
The endcap and baffles will need to be drilled and baffles clipped.

Shop around and be sure to check OD's and ID's of baffles and tubes.
Also, think of your mounting system as plenty are available.

You can quickly put together a can that's comparable or in excess of a commercial unit in not only performance, but price.
