Clipping/mouseholes on D.A. Mask style K baffles

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Clipping/mouseholes on D.A. Mask style K baffles

Post by rokit »

Hello all, been lurking a while and decided to make a post because I can't quite find what I'm looking for.

I'm working on a form 1 can for .22lr and .17HMR based around Dead Air's Mask design with sorta K baffles telescoping into themselves. They're not timed and orientation of the clips will be random in the tube. I've machined the main body of all the baffles but ran out of time to do anything else. I won't be able to do any more work on it for another 1-2 weeks and have been thinking about what to do here.

Screenshots of the design here: https://imgur.com/a/03fCwCz

I don't know whether to mill all the way through from the bore into the 'back chamber' or just on the face to create some turbulence. Also milling the opposite side of the hole to create a cross flow, referencing this post here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=135439 . Would it be counter intuitive to have a hole through the baffle and flow around? Do you folks have any other ideas?

All you guys seem to be knowledgeable in this field, So I'm asking for your advice.

Thanks

Looking at the image, I can't see those working well for much of anything. I think your best bet it to trim off the disc that forms the "sort of" K shape so your left with regular cones that work just fine. My Ocelot, 1.0"x5.5", is comprised of ten cone baffles with decent shoulders, no clips at all, meters 115.43 dB on a Bruhl & Kjaer Pulse from a 16" rifle shooting 45 gr. AE subs indoors. On a pistol, it gives 123.23 at shooter's ear, only 1.84 dB louder than the longer, heavier TBAC Takedown tested immediately before it.

After bringing that diameter in the assembly I do like how it looks. I think I'll try and take it down to about 1/4 of what it was.

The baffles don't look bad to me.

If it were me, I'd try it just the way it is first and see what you think. You can never un-drill a hole. I bet it would sound pretty decent on a 22.
I don't care what your chart says

The only reason after 243 years the government now wants to disarm you is they intend to do something you would shoot them for!

Thank you Captain for the most informative photos.

Your presentation raises a question that has vexed me for
a long time. It stems in part from having had a relative who was
a famed jazz trumpeter with WW2 Big Band and seeing how
a small input in mouth piece produced a great loud sound
along an increasing wider hole.

The estimable K-baffles are like a trumpet. Has anyone
tried reversing the K's, with the wide cone facing the weapon.

For fun once placed into 3-jaw chuck a high pressure CO2 cartridge and
pressed a steel center in the tail stock into the cap. High
hiss but steady from small hole. As opposed to an air horn.

If someone has reversed the direction of the K's in a tube
please post your results.

The new Silencerco Switchback is modular, and they recommend turning the front half around for rifle use:
