Long time lurker....first build

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Long time lurker....first build

Post by Chips26 »

Hey yall, long time lurker here.

With the state of Form 4s and the gov shutdown (and no beginning of eForm4s in sight) I've decided to take the plunge and do my first homebuilt. I'm a CAD and machining guy by trade so I feel pretty confident in this endeavor. My main plan for this can is mostly for hunting use on my .243 bolt gun, as well as on my 10.5" 300 BLK pistol. Goal is to keep this as short and light as possible, while still taking most of the edge off and being accurate, as it will mostly be used for coyote hunting.

Hosts:
Howa 1500 in .243, 24" barrel (primary)
10.5" .300BLK shooting primarily supers, some subs
16" 5.56"

Tube:
1.5" OD x 1.375" ID x 6.5" Long from DM (.062" wall) Ti
Griffin taper adapter
Coned end cap (may eventually weld together)

Guts:
60 deg clipped cones (5 or 6, havent decided yet) 2x17-4 and 3xTi
spacers: 2">1">.75">.675">.675"
(2" blast chamber with Griffin minimalist brake)
.368 bore

Any thoughts/suggestions? I know being a shorty it wont be the quietest can out there, but I'm just looking to take the edge off when hunting and at the range, and being the first foray into Form 1 I'm just trying to keep it simple.

Congratulations for taking the plunge.

Making your own is a lot more rewarding and satisfying than buying a commercial can. I mean, just about anybody can do that.

Judging by your spec sheet, you've done your homework.

Wouldn't really hurt anything to half your final two spacers and adding 2 more baffles though. If you're going to make it short, you may as well pack it with as many baffles as feasible. 8)

I think you'll be happier trading some width & weight for length. 8" long 1.5" OD .054" wall gr. 9 CWSR Ti tube with 8-10 60° or 50° cones spaced much closer together will perform better for your applications.

That's pretty much what I was getting at too.

I'll look into it, I did the math on a 1.625" x 6.5" tube and with 7 baffles it ends up being a hair over 9oz (add 2oz? for spacers). Which honestly isnt bad as my weight goal which is around 15oz. I'll have to do the math again for a 1.5" x 7.5" tube but it sounds like it wont be much more. Need to decide semi quick though so I get my E file in before the shutdown begins again...

My 6" x 1.625" all titanium silencer is 12oz.

I would want something bigger for a 243. It has enough backpressure with 223 already. On a bolt gun, it might be alright since you don't have to worry about backpressure. Im not going to put it on my semi 243.

How good was the suppression on your .223 with your shorty? I played around with CAD the other day and have increased to 7 baffles on the 6.5", may go to 7.5". I see your build had single clips into the baffles as well, what would you have done differently?

It suppresses very well. Knowing what i know now, I dont know if id have done anything differently. That can was short to keep the OAL short on my GFs coyote hunting rifle
