Using Un-heat treated 17-4

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Using Un-heat treated 17-4

Post by chuck417 »

I have a approved form one 17-4 cones, liberty booster and a DM tube with endcaps. If I had access to heat treating equipment I would do H900 however I don’t. Could I use un-heat treated 17-4 in a 45 can? The can would see at best some rapid fire and most likely no full auto in its lifetime.

Yes, you can use Cond A as Al can be used in a 45 design.
You could, also, buy the 17-4 as H1150.

Thanks for the reply! I would assume I wouldn’t see any more erosion than I would on heat treated cones since aluminum works fine for 45 cans?

With the thin cross section you're dealing with on cones, you can get a decent heat treat with an acetylene torch using a rose bud. They won't have the predictable exact characteristics of a perfect H900 heat treat, but will absolutely be harder & stronger than annealed. Find a piece of iron or steel to set them on and preheat that piece so it's not acting as a heat sink on your parts. Heat the cones slowly & uniformly until you get a deep bronze color, but stop short of getting to blue & purple. Just do it in an area with really good lighting so you can see that color change.

Let’s say I don’t heat treat the cones would it really matter with 45? Would there really be any increased erosion or impact to durability?

Honestly, unless you put it on a subgun, I wouldn't worry too much.

Some guys have got their lead pots up to 900* and dropped the baffles in the molten lead, to HT.

Anyone have a source for 17-4 PH 900-1150 so I don't need to fire up the oven for a single stick.
The only reason after 243 years the government now wants to disarm you is they intend to do something you would shoot them for!

It's available in H1150 condition. I've never seen it sold in other heat treated conditions.

I'm lucky. My local yard sells it in all flavors.
