Double check resources... 458 socom form 1

First off, I'm not an engineer, but not stupid by any means. I'm building a Tromix 458 socom 10.5" barrel with a fast twist. Overall plan is to shoot 500 grain hollow point pumpkins, 95% of the time subsonic and suppressed. I'm not into reloading, but will be once thing thing comes along.

My preconceived notion is to use a 1.5" x 9" SD tactical grade 9 titanium .070" wall thickness can. Right now I just want to make sure I'm not going to hurt the can and not focus on the baffles just yet, other than I'm probably going to run internal spacers and a true 2" blast chamber, but I'd like to avoid as much first round pop as possible. Also going to run caps that will bottom out in the threads to cover the weakest parts of the can.

That being said, I'm trying to find resources to figure muzzle pressure with different potential loads, but failure and damage values to associate with the can material and sizing, and also blast chamber sizes.

Last but not least, open the can of worms here, and ask stupid idea? Better ideas? Keep in mind here nfa wait times and my budget are the overall drivers here.

Thanks.

I think 1.5 x 9 is going to be a bit small. The Bowers Vers 458 is 1.75 x 11.25. That's >150% larger internal volume.
As far as pressures, I wouldn't be too worried. I think the 458 chamber Pmax is something like 35k. That's nothing. Coupled with a large chamber and bore volume, your muzzle pressure won't be very high. Any commonly used materials, with average wall thicknesses, will be adequate. I'd run some sort of flash or muzzle brake and push the blast baffle to w/in 1/4" of it. This will help mix whatever O2 is present in the blast chamber and reduce the possibility of FRP. I don't think that should be a huge deal either. When you reload, you should be looking at a powder w/ a good pressure and one that will have the closest to 100% burn, before exiting the muzzle.

That makes a ton of sense. The reason I was steering way from a muzzle devise was the connection and it possibly coming loose, baffle strikes, etc. But for simplicity of usage, and the flow dynamics, I'd love to use one instead of a direct thread.

Are the SD tactical muzzle devises (not the three plug, I dont trust it) with those larger threads trust worthy without adding some type of locking compound or something? If not, what or who's system has everyone had good luck with?

Again, think 458 socom supressed and hunting... Not necessarily Rambo and mag dumps, unless of course the situation deems itself necessary.

Thanks.

Smart to stick to Bowers Design........ Tromix + Bowers is a winner.
When you do subsonic ammo, look at the 500 gr Maker bullets that open up like peeling back a banana.
I am told they will stop a cape buffalo at 50 yds... We make those at Crossfire, and have guys that really like them a lot.
We also bought the terminal inventory of the original SinterFire frag rounds - supersonic - that are HP's and blow a 12" hole!
What fun...

I'm so excited for this fricken thing it's not even funny. I heard an awesome story the other day. Friend of a cousin sort of thing. He was apparently a prison guard in Iraq. They named the 458 socom the "Master Key", only round they found that would open any lock.

I will have to look into those bullets. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is how skinny my wallet will be in order to feed this.

Also, this is not an easy task in finding a can this large!

I would definitely start reloading if you are not doing so already. That’s the only way to go if you plan on shooting more than a few times a year.

TBGID, any progress updates on this one yet? I am laying out a F1 can for 458 socom also, & looking for feed back as there is not near the info out there about the big bores compared to 30 cal & 5.56.
