Hello all. Recently I completely a form 1 can for my 300blk pistol. I am super satisfied with how well the can works. It was simple 1-7/8" 4130 tubing and stainless washers from the hardware store pressed into come shapes. My tools are very basic compared to many. I have no lathe at my disposal however and that will govern this build.
I have collected 2.5" stainless freeze plugs for my baffles and I will need to source some 4130 tube. Aside from a muzzle brake I'm at a loss for the barrel interface as far as threads go.
Thought and suggestions are welcome!
TIA

My 50bmg suppressor journey
Re: My 50bmg suppressor journey
Onlinemetals.com is where I get most of my raw stock. They have decently priced 4130.
Re: My 50bmg suppressor journey
I picked up some materials;
- 3' of 3" .125 wall 4130 tube with a 2.76" id.
- 2' of 2.75" OD .250 wall of 4130 to fabricate spacers.
- 2.5" stainless freeze plugs. For baffles.
- 2.5" stainless washers, for baffles.
- 1" -14 stainless flanges nut, for barrel adapter.
I plan to make a 17.5" x 3" suppressor . I will alternate flat and cupped baffles. I'm not sure how many baffles yet. The spacers will be build from the 2.75" tube that I will skeletons and weld to the baffles, essentially creating an inner core to be inserted into the 3" tube. I purchased enough material to make a second can down the road.

I'm doing a hybrid coaxial can using 1.80 dia freeze plugs.

I'm still working on the spacing, and I may need to make custom washers, but I have decided if I'll use any yet.

Re: My 50bmg suppressor journey
I'm still waiting on the 2.75, .25 tube. I have been pondering how to keep weight down as the .250 tube will be heavy. I will likely just us it for the blast chamber and for bushings to weld the washers and freeze plugs directly to the 3" outer tube. I will try and assemble a few sketches over the weekend .

I'm using that 3" od x 2.76 id tube for my expansion chamber. 12 inches isn't terribly heavy. .25 wall will be too heavy.

That thing is gonna weigh about 20 pounds using so much heavy wall carbon steel tube.
If I were making it, I would go tubeless using 2.5" 17-4 H900 with .100" WT in the blast chamber and .065" from there forward.

Barrett's qdl is made from 4130, and not all of us have machining equipment. Personally, I want the extra weight to soak up recoil, but it's not likely it'll weight more than 8 lbs. My rifle is fairly light, being under 30 lbs fully loaded with optics and loaded mag.ECCO Machine wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 12:09 pm That thing is gonna weigh about 20 pounds using so much heavy wall carbon steel tube.

Re: My 50bmg suppressor journey
In hindsight I will not need to use the .25 tube for anything but "shim rings" for the baffles. Otherwise it will add too much unnecessary weight. I believe the 16" 3" can with baffles should come in at 6 pounds or so...
Re: My 50bmg suppressor journey
Is there a range of number of baffles and spacing to shoot for? TIA
