9mm Suppressor (no tools)

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

9mm Suppressor (no tools)

Post by dirt43 »

I am new to the idea of a form 1. I didn't even know this was a thing until about a month ago. I am looking to source all the parts and do minimal work, as I don't have any metal working tools. I am trying to build a suppressor for a scorpion evo without breaking the bank. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard.

You're going to need some basic tools, or a friend with them willing to loan/help. If you can't manage poking some holes in metal parts, gonna have to suck it up and go F4.

As a general rule, the cost of the parts you will need for a quality build is inversely proportionate to your metalworking capabilities. Those with well tooled mills and lathes can build very nice cans for peanuts using cheap material drops. Those with only a drill & files are gonna have to pony up for 99% of the machine work having been done by someone else.

I suppose with no tools at all, you could build an "Irish" silencer, sometimes called a "Russet" silencer, but its really hard to engrave the serial number...

Alordnappa, thank you for your insightful chuckle on this gloomy day.

Quoting from old 1940's joke:
"If Mississippi wore Missouri's New Jersey what would Dela-Ware?
IDAHO! I'AlAskA."

Seriously though, it is uncomfortable to see a question for a no-tools; no experience;
(possibly) no-Stamp suppressor build . Congrats on your your humorous but incisive response.

Call me old fashion but from mega decades
of suppressor research any member here who has actually legally built a can
knows that even having the minimal equipment such as a lathe to hold to limits, drill press, tooling
the can has a good probability of being out of safety specs, off center, etc. and puts its user and/or
folks at range in danger.

A storied instructor once said in class in 1960s, after showing a version of the OSS
Hi Standard HDM .22 silenced pistol U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers carried with him when he was downed
in Russia:
"The ultimate silenced weapon is this 8" Randall #2*".

In retrospect really worth the 'exorbitant' $45.00 in 1958 dollars. :)

We beseech anyone really contemplating taking such a risky path to rethink.

Its not realistic for no tools but we do have a new member with a FFL for hire. Having him thread and bore baffle holes is much better than trying to do these jobs yourself.

Giving the gentleman the benefit of the doubt, I would think that he he could build suppressor from one of the "Filter kits" with little more than a hand drill and one bit. I can't believe that anyone in America does not have at least a cordless drill, and if they don't, I suggest this kind of a project may be too much for them. It would be tough to make those baffle holes, let alone do any clipping, with a couple of sharp rocks...even Chimps use tools! Since it is for an Scorpion Evo, he would not have to worry about a LID, and as long as he does not strive for very tight tolerances for the cone bore, I am sure it would be doable. Of course, you could fork over at least a few bucks and buy a used mini-lather or something similar on E-Bay, but having a real machinist do it will be a lot better, Trying to hand stamp a thin tube with numbers will not silence the screams of agony when you find out how much you have dented and deformed your precious tube!

I have basic tools. I just dont have a lathe or cnc machine. Everything I see people are talking about lathes and top of the line metal working tools. I have basic tools. I have mostly wood working tools. I just thought this would be the place to go to for help. Or if there is a website that I can buy the majority of the parts and just put them together.

I am looking at a kit from diversified machine that it looks like would just need baffles. I am not sure what I'm doing and there are very limited resources online that I can find.

No offense, but you haven't looked very hard. There are entire forums dedicated to solvent trap and parts kit building. I even referenced one such site, just 2 posts down from yours.

If you are just doing one can on a form have someone else machine or baffles for you. Perfectly legal and a good financial decision. If you want to be the DIY guy then do that. It'll cost a few grand for a light duty lathe and a mill but it will be worth it in the long run. Now I personally can vouch for the Spectrum machine guy. I live close by and have been through his shop and he does good work. Might be worth it to have him cut and clip baffles then down the road if you get really into the hobby buy your own gear

If you have basic tools (hand drill), you can easily make a can from a solvent trap kit.

The next level above would be drill, screw driver, and saw to make a 1970s style can with screw together parts. They still do cheapo cans this way in Europe.

Anything resembling a modern commercial can that’s not produced from a solvent kit, will require a lathe and a laser engraver if you want your info looking professional on the can. At this point, you’re spending more than you would on a commercial can on a Form 4.
