Universal suppressor?

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Universal suppressor?

Post by 9245 »

What would be the legalities of interchangeable internals? Since the batfe deems simply replacing a wipe to be “remanufacturing” and as the maker of a form 1 suppressor you are the manufacturer, would it be legal to have a registered tube and a set of different caliber internals that can be swapped back and forth? The idea would be that you would only need one suppressor for all your calibers.

Alternatively, what about a K baffle suppressor with iver bored holes and a space for a wipe at the front of each one. Effectively the wipe would seal the gas leak from the baffles then one would simply need to swap the wipes when they get worn out, the idea would again be to allow one suppressor to be used with multiple calibers.

As I understand it, the BATF considers even 1 'extra' baffle to be a suppressor in its own right, effectively a 'weapon' by the definitions they enforce. No extra internal parts are permitted. The workaround, of course, is to ignore the regulation and do as you please... just don't get caught, as that would likely mean a bit of time in prison.

Same goes for wipes. As you seem already to understand, the official position is that wipes are silencer parts. Apparently after wipes are completely destroyed, it is okay to 'manufacture' new wipes to replace them, but you are not permitted to have such parts available in ready-to-use form, they have to be in a sheet or rod and only be cut when the worn out ones have been rendered useless by cutting or otherwise destroying them.

As for over-bored holes and wipes used in combination - there may be some utility in such an approach, especially when using something designed to work efficiently in your largest intended calibre with something tiny like .22lr. Of course accuracy goes out the window, but for a magazine or two the wipes will certainly make your rimfire shoot more quietly. And they may even keep your baffles cleaner which is nice considering how filthy .22lr residues truly are. But your advanced baffle features such as porting/clipping are negated with baffle wipes as it becomes essentially a washers-and-spacers sort of arrangement, not the greatest for suppressing efficiently.

Unforurately ... the BATFE would consider extra baffles and wipes to constructive intent to be manufacture another suppressor reguardless if a registered tube / suppressor is present.

Look at the Gemtech Aurora II it has 8 neoprene wipes and 3 petroleum jelly-filled spacer baffles. the design is really quiet .... accuracy not so good as the RN nose bullet hit each wipe and degregated the accuracy. used for close quarters "Git OFFA ME" situation when stealth is needed. as you shoot the can become louder, reports I have is that after / about 20 -30 shots no suppresson value.
https://www.gemtech.com/catalog/product ... aurora-ii/

here is what they (gemtech) says:
"The Aurora-II is an update of the Fighter Pilot’s favorite wipe suppressor. Our engineers created the smallest, lightest can on the market. The Aurora-II is threaded on both ends, making it compatible with Metric and Standard thread pitches. The Aurora-II is made from Military Grade 70-75T6 aluminum, with the internals composed of 8 neoprene wipes and 3 petroleum jelly-filled spacer baffles. Because it weighs 3.5 oz, it does not require a Nielsen device.

*WIPE DISCLAIMER* BATFE considers wipes to be silencer parts. Because of this, the AURORA-II must be sent to GEMTECH for wipes to be replaced. Any AURORA-II owner can send the suppressor to GEMTECH for repacking/wipe replacement for $29.99.

NOTE: The Aurora-II cannot be used with hollow point or expanding ammunition. These types of bullets can cause catastrophic damage to the suppressor and possible injuries.
Notice for California consumers:"

Extra caliber baffles I'm sorry to say for your intent of a multicaliber device would till be considered the same as the wipes. JUST NOW noticed but looking back at Gemtech's California Prop 65 warning.... Why even post it suppressor are illegal there so its really not needed

The Gemtech really does look like a fuel filter! I was amused by the California cancer warning on their webpage....like you could actually find one of these in California!
